Habitat for Humanity Director, Major Gifts (West Region)


Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is seeking an experienced, energetic, and creative professional to be our Director, Major Gifts for the West region based in either Los Angeles or San Francisco. This person will cultivate six-figure relationships resulting in major gift donations. HFHI is a non-profit faith-based ministry dedicated to eliminating substandard housing. This exceptional opportunity will provide an individual the opportunity to work collaboratively with senior executives and program professionals in developing fundraising strategies through a donor focused development program. Reporting to HFHI’s Sr. Director of Individual Giving, the Director, Major Gifts - West will be responsible for developing a team a strategy and the portfolio required to identify, close and retain mid-six figure relationships with individuals, and for meeting a multi-million dollar annual revenue goal.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
  1. Establishing a strategic and systematic focus on closing six-figure commitments from high net-worth individuals
  2. Identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding qualified prospects and donors, managing a portfolio of approximately 80 qualified relationships in a defined territory
  3. Meeting or exceeding multi-million dollar annual revenue goals
  4. Strategically engaging Board members and senior leaders in the development process
DUTIES:
SUPPORT TO DOs:
  1. Recruit world-class, successful leadership gifts professionals who possess the passion, analytical and interpersonal skills required to secure major and principal gifts, and who can sustain philanthropic relationships.
  2. Conduct 1:1 donor development strategy coaching with gift officers. Ensure each gift officer is annually closing five, six and seven-figure gifts.
  3. Help each gift officer maintain a portfolio with 150 top prospects: conduct quarterly reviews, remove inactive donors, add new opportunities, document strategy and asks planned, ensure proper balance of prospects based on donor interests to ensure each stakeholder sees a monetary return
  4. Travel to markets twice annually to visit with gift officer, affiliates, and conduct donor visits with staff
  5. Mentor and develop emerging fundraising talent among HFH affiliates and national organizations
  6. Provide spiritual encouragement and mentoring to others
  7. Effectively manage HFHI resources including travel and business expenses for self and for other HFHI team members
  8. Ensure gift officers are completing reporting requirements on time, including face to face reports, monthly metrics reports, gift transmittals, etc.
DIRECT FUNDAISING - management of a personal portfolio:
  1. Systematically identifying, qualifying, and strategizing a pipeline for six and seven figure gifts
  2. Routinely networking with and access to Fortune 500 C-level execs in major metropolitan areas, and interacting with high-net worth individuals ($50M+ in net assets) for the purpose of cultivating personal relationships and developing personal giving. Forwards leads to colleagues when corporate giving interests are expressed
  3. Routinely engaging board members, organization executives and current donors in peer-prospect identification, visits, and both six and seven figure
Required Skills:
  1. BA/BS required, MBA preferred
  2. CFRE preferred
  3. 10+ years of front-line experience in principal gifts development in a large, multi-national setting, with at least five years of experience managing a nationally deployed team
  4. Experience in international development and relief strongly preferred
  5. Successful experience closing complex six and seven figure campaign commitments including planned and endowment gifts, land and infrastructure, and financial investments such as low-interest debt financing
  6. $5 million + in total closed personally during her/his career
  7. Collaborating with others in a complex, matrix-structured, multinational, dynamic organizational environment. A track record of positioning affiliated entities as valued customers, and experience brokering between the needs of the affiliates and the interests of the donor/investor
  8. $2 million+ expense budget management experience
  9. Innovative and creative with the ability to develop a strategic vision for development
  10. Demonstrated track record of successful fundraising in an environment of similar complexity. Experience in a nation-wide, federated organization with an understanding of the dynamics of such organizations
  11. Ability to partner effectively with a committed senior management team and board
  12. Demonstrated ability to provide executive-level management oversight, leadership, and strategic direction for Principal Development function. Ability to develop trust and strong collaborative working relationships
  13. A team-builder willing to empower subordinates to get the job done while providing the support they need and holding them accountable for results
  14. Must have a history of recruiting, developing and retaining exceptionally talented people
  15. Superior presentation skills, including the presence to deal effectively with diverse constituencies including principal donors, Board members, national staff and leadership in the field.
  16. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write and speak clearly and effectively, and to listen, and an unusual capacity to engage, inspire and persuade
  17. The ability to ignite a passion and to create and communicate excitement about HFH’s compelling mission
  18. Strong technology skills and experience with innovations that can streamline the development process
  19. A high level of energy, self-confidence, and a positive “can-do” attitude are essential, as is humility
  20. 50% travel required
