YWLN is seeking a Director of Girls' Education who will oversee quality girls' education programming across The Young Women's Leadership Schools (TYWLS), currently five in New York City and one school in its planning phase. The Director of Girls' Education will supervise and lead the growing Girls' Education team (comprised of five employees) to achieve student outcomes, support best practices across network schools and manage school relationships to ensure high performance. Additional duties include building strong relationships with strategic partners, developing a strategy for YWLN affiliate schools and supporting YWLN initiatives. The position will report to YWLN's Chief Program Officer.
Primary Roles and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Building a strong staff and culture of performance in the Girls' Education Team
- Conduct hiring, supervision and performance review process of program staff members to ensure that goals are achieved
- Lead professional development to build the capacity of individuals and the team
- Ensure that program staff effectively works with TYWLS school personnel to achieve desired student outcomes
Ensuring quality of current programs in TYWLS schools to maximize student outcomes
- Direct the development, implementation and sustainability of high quality girls' education programming during the school day and out-of-school time
- Direct curriculum development and documentation around four key components of the "whole girl" model including leadership, health and wellness, STEM and early college and career awareness
- Support the TYWLS school personnel with implementation of instructional strategies that support girls' education
- Develop and facilitate professional development for teachers and principals
- Provide on-going assessment of school quality across the network including data collection, analysis and reporting to YWLN
- Support principals with aligning programming to NYC Department of Education (NYC DOE) accountability systems
- Ensure implementation of the YWLN Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in schools
- Align goals, staffing and resources in YWLN annual budgeting process and monitor spending across TYWLS schools
- Remain current on relevant research, policy and other trends affecting YWLN programs
Planning for Girls' Education Team and TYWLS Schools
- Actively support YWLN organizational goals and ensure alignment with Girls' Education team priorities
- In partnership with Executive Director and Chief Program Officer, develop strategic priorities for girls' education programs
- Plan with principals of TYWLS schools to ensure that girls' education programming meets schools' needs
- Support new school development during launching, scaling up and sustaining phases
Communications, Relationship Management and External Partnerships
- Work collaboratively with various teams and departments at YWLN to support organizational goals and outcomes
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with TYWLS principals and NYC DOE leaders in the central office and networks
- Write YWLN Board Reports, coordinate work of TYWLS Board Committee and attend YWLN Board Meetings
- Oversee the expansion of volunteer cultivation for girls' education programs including TYWLS alumnae
- Develop and maintain strategic partnerships (e.g. National Coalition of Girls Schools, NYC DOE, community based organizations and non-profit organizations) to maximize impact of YWLN programs
- Transition to primary contact for YWLN affiliated schools in other states and oversee the implementation of YWLN MOUs
- Contribute to national conversation on girls' education through representing YWLN at conferences, membership in girls' education organizations and publications
- Work collaboratively on the biennial national conference on education in girls' public and private schools
Key Qualifications
A demonstrated passion for expanding educational opportunities for low-income girls and belief in YWLN's mission
Extensive leadership experience in secondary public schools, principal preferred
Deep knowledge of best practices in secondary public school curriculum, instruction, assessment, girls' schools preferred
Bachelor's degree from an accredited 4-year college or university, master's degree preferred
Experience with public new school development, NYC preferred
A strong history of developing, managing and supporting high performing educational teams
A successful track record of designing and managing education programs to achieve student outcomes
Knowledge of college awareness, access and success programs
Superlative planning, organizational and writing skills
Ability to effectively communicate with diverse stakeholders (e.g. principals, funders, school district leaders)
