JOB DESCRIPTION:
Macfadden and Associates seeks one (1) full-time Graphic Designer to help shape and create data visualizations for the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA). This individual will be responsible for visually representing, with infographics and charts, USAID/OFDA’s role in international humanitarian assistance and in specific disaster responses for U.S. Government stakeholders and the public. The Graphic Designer will be a key member of the Information Support Unit (ISU), reporting to the ISU manager and working very closely with the Geographic Information Unit, the Strategic Communications Team, and other divisions within USAID/OFDA.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
In coordination with the ISU, conceptualize and develop infographics and other visual representations that effectively communicate USAID/OFDA’s work to public and internal U.S. Government audiences. Develop guidelines and standards for the use of data visualization in a variety of USAID/OFDA’s information products. Conceptualize and develop design solutions and templates for a wide variety of projects, including internal and external information products, multimedia and print media materials, the USAID/OFDA annual report, conference and event materials, PowerPoint presentations, newsletters, exhibit/signage materials, online products, and USAID/OFDA-related content on the USAID website. Maintain the USAID/OFDA photo database, including by requesting and recording photo permissions and caption information. Act as design consultant to staff by collaboratively developing clear visual representations and infographics that communicate humanitarian programs or concepts, as well as current USAID priorities and strategies. Other duties as assigned, including providing basic training on graphic design software to members of the ISU.
EDUCATION:
B.A. in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Fine Arts, or a related discipline is required. The Graphic Designer must be motivated to keep up with new or evolving computer graphics and design trends independently.
EXPERIENCE:
Two years in a graphic design role. Must demonstrate professional graphic design experience and have a strong graphic design portfolio, incorporating infographics and data visualization; experience in creating interactive charts and infographics extremely desirable. Experience with developing the layout for sizable reports and familiarity with tagging for 508 compliance is extremely desirable. Familiarity with humanitarian and disaster relief issues, U.S. Government agencies, and strategic messaging a plus.
SKILLS REQUIRED: Demonstrated fluency in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, as well as the Microsoft Office suite Highly creative and innovative artistic talent Strong conceptual-thinking and problem-solving skills Ability to self-manage large and multiple projects in a fast-paced environment Proven ability to work in high-pressure situations with workdays that often exceed normal business hours Excellent oral, written, and oral communication skills Proven ability to consistently meet deadlines Excellent interpersonal skills Ability to work independently but also function effectively as part of a team Creativity and keen problem-solving skills
