GCHQ is a critical part of the UK’s intelligence and security service, working with MI5 and MI6 to counter threats to Britain. Whilst MI5 and MI6 have a focus on ‘human intelligence’, GCHQ’s expertise lies in the electronic and digital world - or ‘signals intelligence’ as it is known. At the core of this lies one of the world’s most powerful computing environments, helping us to monitor and gather electronic and digital signals from around the world. But, the world is changing. Fast. Every day brings new technological advances. New ways to communicate that offer greater potential to share information - and potentially pose a greater threat.
This interesting role is all about investigating emerging technologies, in order to evaluate their potential use by us, or hostile agencies. In this way, we remain one step ahead of the technological curve. This is not ‘blue sky’ research. Instead it’s about developing practical applications and techniques which enhance our organisational capability. It perfectly balances commercial imperatives with academic-quality research. The type of work we do includes:
- High Speed Internet Processing
- Hardware
- Network Exploration
- Data Mining
- Natural Language Processing
- Mobile Tehnology
- Internet Research
- Stream Analysis
While the majority of roles are based within our ICT Research team, a very small number will work closer to the business, exploring how to integrate emerging technologies within GCHQ’s operational work.
You must be a British citizen and be expected to have, or be studying towards (by the summer of 2013) a minimum 2:1 honours degree in a single or joint subject such as Applied Mathematics, Physics, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or any other numerate/technical subject. You’ll need a knowledge of software development and the ability to apply mathematical and/or analytical techniques to problem solving is essential.
GCHQ offers excellent opportunities for mentoring and training. You will be eligible to join our Professional Training Scheme, accredited by the IET and BCS, and we will pay your fees to achieve Chartered Engineering Status or gain membership of other professional bodies. We also offer a wide range of benefits including pension and flexible working hours which allow you to ‘earn’ up to four days additional leave per month.
