America Abroad Media (AAM) is an innovative media organization that provides in-depth reporting and analysis of today’s critical international issues. AAM promotes the free exchange of ideas, fosters critical thinking, and empowers self-governing citizens worldwide by:
  • Producing in-depth radio programming on international affairs for broadcast on public radio stations across the United States;
  • Partnering with leading media outlets across the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia to produce high-quality programming for broadcast on indigenous television and radio stations;
  • Connecting audiences in the US and overseas for direct discussion and debate on key international issues of mutual interest;
  • Providing top foreign journalists with a unique opportunity to visit and report from the United States on issues relevant to their local audiences;
  • Producing multimedia educational resources on international affairs for use in American college and university classrooms;
  • Providing a dynamic online platform that features engaging, in-depth and comprehensive multimedia resources on international issues.
A few of America Abroad Media’s current initiatives include:
  • Town hall dialogues that engage citizens around the globe in peer-to-peer conversations on key issues. They recently completed the first-ever town hall connecting people from Afghanistan and Pakistan in an effort to foster open exchange between these two nations. 
  • Monthly radio documentaries aired on public radio stations around the US, taking an in-depth look at a critical issue in international affairs and U.S. foreign policy. Past programs have focused upon religious minorities in the Middle East and the global water challenge.

Position:

America Abroad Media is currently seeking a strategic and experienced development professional to join their team in the role of Director of Development. Reporting directly to and working closely with the President, the Director of Development will play a critical role in the growth of this dynamic and high-impact organization by spearheading and overseeing all efforts related to fundraising and development. Specifically, the Director of Development will craft an ambitious and strategic development plan for the organization and lead a team of two staff to execute against that plan. This organizational leader will also play a key role in the organization’s leadership, collaborating closely with communications and program staff, as well as other senior leaders.

Responsibilities:

  • Draft and implement a strategic development plan for AAM that will maximize the organization’s financial support and future impact, including through individuals, foundations, corporations and government grants
  • Develop and oversee the process of identifying and cultivating new funding sources, including devising the strategy and building the infrastructure to capture and manage new funding streams
  • Work closely with AAM’s President to maximize his impact with potential funders, and serve as one of the external faces of the organization to key supporters
  • Oversee the grant-writing process – including identifying sources, writing proposals and reporting – by managing the coordination between the development, programming and financial teams
  • Collaborate with the program teams and other senior leaders around the conceptualization and crafting of new program ideas
  • Manage the Donor Pro contact database and oversee staff to ensure timely and accurate collection and maintenance of all relevant information
  • Oversee the use of social media tools to engage donors

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success creating and implementing strategic development plans, with a particular emphasis on success cultivating individual donors and corporate partnerships
  • A strong background in and proven understanding of international affairs, and interest and experience in media and journalism
  • Excellent relationship builder, with the ability to effectively interact with internal staff and other senior organizational leaders, as well as to develop strong relationships with potential funders
  • Superb written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a team, and to collaborate across departments to complete projects
  • Detail-oriented and extremely organized, with the ability to manage multiple projects and to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
