Mitchell Group Communications Officer


The Mitchell Group (TMG) is seeking a Communications Officer to provide expert oversight in the development of fact sheets, PowerPoint presentations and speeches for international development agency. Candidates should be very knowledgeable about economic development issues, particularly in East Africa. Candidates’ skills must include: excellent writing and editing, complete fluency in MS Office, demonstrable knowledge of style, and reporting requirements. Prior experience with agency is required as is U.S. Government security clearance.
Duties and Responsibilities: · Serve as the principal contact to review, develop, and disseminate information related to Africa economic initiatives; · Coordinate efforts by agency technical staff to promote knowledge of the development trade initiatives to Africa Bureau senior managers, field staff, and the general public; · Coordinate efforts with public affairs officers; · Establish and maintain contacts with donor representatives and other U.S. Government agencies to collect information of interest to economic initiatives in Africa; · Coordinate efforts between senior and technical staff to develop public information programs related to these economic development initiatives; · Ensure targeted, coherent, and consistent messages to senior and other U.S. Government representatives, and donors; · Draft weekly updates and contribute to briefing materials and scene-setters in support of the participation of senior managers for internal and external meetings; · Respond to inquiries from the general public and the media as directed; · Prepare and update standard information packages on these economic initiatives for briefings and for distribution to the public; and · Update briefing materials on the web.
Desired Qualifications and Requirements Must have U.S. Government clearance. Education: Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred, in public relations, journalism, or a related discipline. Experience: A minimum of 10 years demonstrated successful experience in public relations, or related field, is preferred. Proven experience in disseminating information within agency or a related U.S. Government agency is highly desired. Knowledge and Abilities: The successful candidate must be capable of crafting information messages to a predominately U.S. Government audience in various formats (weekly updates, briefers, websites, cables, etc.). Good coordination and organizational skills are required. Skills: Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills are required. Knowledge of word processing is required. Familiarity with databases, electronic mail, and website maintenance preferred. Knowledge of issues facing economic development of Africa is desired. Exercise of Judgment: Work assigned to incumbent includes a variety of duties and processes requiring extensive exercise of judgment. Nature, Level, and Purpose of Contacts: Personal contacts are with Africa Bureau staff, senior Bureau management, and key stakeholders. Time Required to Perform Full Range of Duties: The first three months of employment will be considered a probationary period. The incumbent will be expected to perform the full range of duties before the end of this period.
