Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.
We are non-governmental, non-religious and work with many local NGOs and community based organizations to implement our programs. We currently work in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Zambia – countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate their children. Since our inception, Room to Read’s worldwide team has impacted over 6 million children by constructing more than 1,500 schools, establishing over 13,000 libraries, publishing 700 new children’s book titles in 11 local languages, and rewarding over 16,000 girls with long-term, holistic scholarships.
Room to Read has an annual budget of approximately US$44 million and our global staff numbers over 600. Our global headquarters is located in San Francisco, and we have smaller fundraising offices in Delhi, New York, Hong Kong, London, Mumbai, Sydney, and Tokyo. We have an Asia Regional Office located in New Delhi, a Southern Africa Regional Office in Pretoria, and program offices in Colombo, Dar es Salaam, Dhaka, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kathmandu, Lusaka, New Delhi, Pretoria, Phnom Penh, and Vientiane.
Room to Read in Nepal
In Nepal, as of now, we have supported to establish over 3500 school libraries aiming to create a reading habit of primary school children, published 231 children books for quality materials to read, constructed over 500 schools and supporting to create an enabling learning environment through comprehensive Reading & Writing Instruction program in 240 primary class rooms of 80 schools. Through our Girls Education Program, we have also been providing financial, material, academic & life skills education support to more than 3000 girls from underprivileged families to complete secondary education and beyond. We have been working in a number of districts of Nepal through 9 partner NGOs and we have around 100 staff working in Room to Read. We are at growing stage and thinking to expand our coverage more in future.
Position Overview
The PO-RWI will be responsible for managing all aspects of RWI program implemented in the assigned district (s) which include developing conceptual framework, planning, budgeting, implementation, conducting teacher professional development activities, capacitating building of partner NGO, reporting, M & E, district level networking and advocacy.
Duties & Responsibilities
Development & Planning:
- Develop expertise on the concept of RWI program and language issue of children and contribute to the designing RtR program, more specifically RWI program, by bringing new ideas/concepts and local level knowledge.
- In close consultation with Field Program Manager (FPM), other RtR officers and partner NGO, develop annual plan and budget of RWI program for the assigned district (s) in line with the guideline provided by the RtR.
Implementation:
- Through partner NGO, be responsible in implementing all activities planned for the assigned district (s) and ensure that all the activities have been implemented correctly on time with maintaining high quality standards in line with the processes described in the Annual Planning document/program guideline/calendar or partnership agreement.
- Provide technical support to partner staff whenever needs arise in the overall aspects of RWI program management.
- Design and conduct technical training/orientation related to program required for partner NGO staff, teachers and other stakeholders.
- Manage RtR partner NGOs work, assess the capacity building needs regularly on all aspects of program management and design and implement capacity building programs systematically for partner staff, RtR staff and other stakeholders so that they will be able to implement RtR program effectively.
Monitoring and Evaluation
- Contribute to the designing of M & E systems, mechanisms and tools for RWI program, train people on its application, monitor on how it is implemented.
- Implement approved actions coming out of R M & E findings to improve the program effectiveness.
- Organize regular program review meeting with partner NGO, DEO and other stakeholders, discuss the successes/challenges and address the challenges.
Networking & Advocacy
- Establish and manage relationships with DEO other NGO’s, government officials and local educational facilities/authorities; schedule and attend meetings with them to coordinate planning and implementation of projects.
- Represent Room to Read at relevant meetings and occasionally assist in hosting key donor visits.
Reporting
- Prepare internal and external reports with quality required by RtR such as donor report, government report, monthly/annually/quarterly progress report, best practices, news paper article, case studies, lessons learned etc.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor degree in Nepali Language (Master Degree Preferred) from recognized university
- Minimum 3 years of Nepali Language teaching experience at primary level
- Good knowledge and understanding of education philosophy
- Minimum 1 year program management experience preferably education program
- Expertise in designing and conducting capacity building activities
- Fluent in writing and speaking of English Language

Compensation:
The salary range for this position will be determined based upon the experience of the candidate hired.
