Due to expanding commercial need, an opportunity has arisen for a Java developer to join our fast-paced, highly motivated research and development team working within the British Geological Survey, a scientific public sector organisation that has been in operation since 1835.
BGS scientists work on a diverse range of subjects, from the systematic modeling of the geology of the UK to current environmental topics such as pollution monitoring and carbon capture and storage, from Earth hazards such as volcanoes and earthquakes to the geology of the marine environment. The information systems needed to support this science are equally diverse. Our requirements for data storage are large and complex, as are the ways in which we promote and deliver information to our customers. We are actively working on new technologies such as crowd sourcing and mobile applications. We use a wide variety of languages and tools to develop our information products.
This is a rare opportunity for an enthusiastic, dedicated individual to help us build, maintain and support our suite of in-house, business-critical software applications. Reporting to our application architect and working closely with customers, both internal and external, this is a technically varied role in which you will learn our software systems and become responsible for analysing and implementing new systems, new features, fixing bugs, testing, producing documentation and supporting our users. In return we can offer you interesting work within a supportive, stable environment that values initiative and offers excellent personal development opportunities and benefits.
Equal opportunities
NERC has an equal opportunities policy and welcomes applications from all sections of the community. People with disabilities and those from ethnic minorities are currently under-represented and their applications are particularly welcome. Guaranteed interview scheme for candidates with disabilities.
As an organisation NERC is currently working towards achieving Investors in People (IiP) accreditation. Our Swindon Head Office has received this accreditation.
