Environmental Education Instructor - Nature's Classroom Institute


Nature's Classroom Institute (NCI) is a non-profit 5-day residential outdoor education organization providing innovative, multidisciplinary instruction to students in 1st through 8th grade. We are currently seeking college graduates with a strong commitment to children and the environment to join our team and teach in a supportive and energetic program that goes beyond traditional environmental education.

Position Overview:

NCI is currently seeking to fill several Environmental Instructor positions to potentially work at multiple locations, including: Mukwonago, Wisconsin; Bruceville, Texas; Wimberly, Texas; and Cleveland, New York.

Contract dates are:

2 months; April 8th - June 9th 2013
9 months; August 25th 2013- June 8th 2014
Responsibilities:

Develop your skills as a teacher and naturalist amongst other like-minded instructors.
Choose lesson topics based upon your own personal interests and educational background.
Teach in no larger than a 1:12 ratio in a natural setting that includes a private lake and 400 acres of woodlands, prairies, wetlands, and glacial moraines.
Develop your own curriculum in a variety of academic areas or adapt any of the hundreds of lessons from the NCI Teacher Handbook.
Introduce students to our organic garden and farm, which includes chickens, goats, llamas, and ducks, a greenhouse, a blacksmithing forge, a science lab, a pottery studio, and a woodworking shop.
Lead hands-on field studies in a variety of environments.
Facilitate teambuilding initiatives and low-ropes challenges.
Participate in group activities that include cultural and historical simulations, character development programs, and land stewardship projects.
Work on our farm, on our prairie restoration project, on invasive species eradication projects, and on land conservation projects.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree.
Strong commitment to children and the environment.
Creativity and adaptability.
Interest in motivational learning, community awareness, and conservation of natural resources.
Special skills such as music, storytelling, and team dynamics are helpful.

Compensation: $325/week; room and board provided.
