Gulf of California Program Director

Location: La Paz, Baja California Sur

Reports to: General Director, WWF-México/ Mesoamerican Reef (MAR)

Main responsibilities:
Responsible for planning, monitoring and evaluation of WWF conservation actions in the Gulf of California ecoregion, building synergies with governmental and non-governmental partners of WWF in the region and the international network.

 

Ensures the work of WWF programs in the ecoregion and the coordination and financial and administrative oversight of the program. Leads and coordinates technical and administrative teams in the effective and efficient implementation of field projects, and monitors compliance with the goals of program performance and proper budget execution.

 

Responsible for setting priorities and fundraising, promotes and coordinates the development of funding proposals.

Strengthens conservation strategies for the ecoregion in coordination with the Conservation, Climate Change, Watershed, Finance & Administration and Communication Directors, and the WWF-México/MAR General Director.

 

Maintains professional relationships with donors, government institutions, civil society organizations, research institutions and the private sector, to facilitate the achievement of financial resources and support to promote the work of WWF and its partners in the region.

 

Member of the Technical Committee WWF-Mexico/MAR.

Requirements:
1. Knowledge: Ph.D. or a Masters degree, technically competent in the field of natural resource management.
2. Experience: At least 15 years of experience in conservation projects focused on management, personnel supervision and field projects in the region.
3. Skills: Experience in administrative and management is essential along with excellent communication and diplomatic skills. Must think creatively in the design and implementation of projects. Demonstrated ability in fundraising and partnerships with all sectors.
4. Fluent in English and Spanish, both spoken and written.
5. Willing to travel between 20% and 30% of the time.

Guatemala Global Climate Change Adaptation Specialist

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world's leading conservation organization, seeks a Global Climate Change Adaptation Specialist for an anticipated large USAID funded Sustainable Landscapes and Adaptations Program in Central America. This project will support Central Americas transition to a low emissions, climate resilient development, through investments in reducing net emissions from forests and enhancing resiliency of people, places, and livelihoods to short and long-term climate impacts.

The Sustainable Landscapes and Adaptation Program will address both forest-related emissions and information for adaptation and for disaster risk reduction. Key program objectives include:

Sustainable Landscapes

•Facilitation of foundational investments to develop carbon credit marketing proposals, to provide financial and economic incentives for the conservation of tropical forest ecosystems.

•Development/deployment of regional/country based integrated operations plans and mitigation measures that address climate change stressors and vulnerabilities.

•Development of integrated and harmonized REDD+ strategies and protocols and MRV protocols/programs and other related agriculture forestry and other land use initiatives.

Adaptation

•Meaningful and useful CC data is being generated by a variety of institutions and is being distributed to decision makers in government, private sector, communities and local stakeholders.

•Distribution systems provide this data in a timely and user friendly manner.

In addition to working with the SICA/CCAD and other intergovernmental partners, the program seeks to enhance the capacities of Central American NGOs to be active partners with USAID. Successful programs will implement proactive transition support toward increasing responsibilities of Central American partner organizations.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

1. Serve as Strategic Objective Manager for the Adaptation sub-award
2. Provide technical leadership and support for Adaptation-related activities
3. Oversee the management of sub-award contracts, activity execution and successful completion of all key objectives and specific deliverables
4. Oversee staff and consultants as pertinent
5. Develop and manage relationships with key partners to execute Adaptation-related activities effectively.
6. Advise and support CCAD and other key SICA institutions in the development and implementation of Adaptation-related activities
7. Provide advice to USAID in regional or international discussions of issues relation to Adaptation and related issues

Work Experience and Requirements

1. At least 10 years of progressively more responsible international work experience is strongly preferred.
2. A Masters level degree in an environmentally related subject area is required
3. Knowledge of Central American Climate Change Policies, Environmental Development and Management Issues is highly desirable
4. Experience assessing climate change impacts and designing projects that reduce those impacts desirable
5. Previous experience working in Central America, preferably in more than one country and at the regional level, desirable
6. Language Proficiency: Level IV (Fluency) English and Spanish level IV is required
7. Excellent interpersonal, analytical, writing, communication, presentation and training skills, sound project management experience, and experience working with government institutions, NGOs, private sector, and local communities.
8. Demonstrated experience in assessing climate change impacts and designing projects that reduce those impacts
