The Research Investigations and Monitoring Unit (RIMU) is Auckland Council's social, economic, environmental and land-use research centre. We provide high-quality evidence that assists policy development, implementation and evaluation.

This role is particularly focused on working on developing, implementing and overseeing primary and secondary research on issues relating to the economy. The Senior Research Economists are the Auckland Council's technical specialists but can also apply their research skills across other areas. As a Research Programme Leader, you will get involved in diverse and interesting projects, therefore, no day will be the same! You will be responsible for collecting, analysing and interpreting qualitative and quantitative data using statistical analysis and modeling, scenario development and forecasting within the local government economic setting, as well as monitoring national and international trends, events and Government policy developments. You will distribute and promote reports, articles, technical publications and research papers for wide ranging Auckland Council research projects.

Proven capability in report writing to a political audience as well as the ability to explain and present complex issues will be a regular component of this role. High levels of communication and relationship skills coupled with the ability to work unsupervised with a strong time management discipline is essential. You will be comfortable presenting to key senior stakeholders and able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of economic models and econometric research techniques. Database management and working with large and complex datasets will form part of your decision-making toolset.

Key pre-requisites are as follows:
  • Post-graduate qualification in Economics or related discipline (including finance, public policy or economic geography). Masters essential.
  • At least five years' experience in research, evaluation and monitoring within Economics discipline
  • Experience in designing and managing research projects
  • Able to translate policy direction and stakeholder requirements into researcher work
  • Demonstrated experience in utilising a range of research methods
  • Experience using economic models and econometric software
  • Evidence of publishing and conferencing
  • Experience in working effectively on collaborative research projects

Research Fellow in Comparative Law BIICL

The British Institute of International and Comparative Law is the foremost independent research and discussion body in the United Kingdom and one of the leading such bodies in the world.

Comparative law is one of the core areas of the Institute's activities. In line with its increasing work in this area, the Institute is seeking to appoint a part-time Research Fellow in Comparative Law for a fixed term of 12 months (with the possibility of renewal).

The Research Fellow will be required to undertake high-quality research on comparative law topics; assist with the organisation of conferences and seminars in the sphere of comparative law; and develop new research projects for the Institute. Particular experience in the sphere of European private law is desirable, specifically tort law and product liability. However, applicants with broad comparative law experience will be considered, as the Institute's work in this area is wide-ranging, including topics such as public procurement and issues of comparative civil procedure.

The person appointed will work closely on comparative law issues with Dr. Duncan Fairgrieve, Senior Research Fellow in Comparative Law. The post will enable the successful applicant to work directly with a broad network of scholars, practitioners, judges, government officials, international institutions and others working in this field.

The Research Fellow will carry out the following tasks in consultation with the Senior Research Fellow in Comparative Law:
  • Undertake and publish high quality research on comparative law;
  • Assist in the organisation of events, such as workshops and conferences;
  • Develop new research projects, including seeking funding from funding bodies;
  • Engage with practitioners and others interested in comparative law;
  • Maintain and update online resources, including a database; and
  • Assist in a collegial way with the outreach and administrative activities relating to comparative law projects.

It is expected that the successful applicant will demonstrate, and provide evidence of, the following:

  • A record of producing high quality legal research in relevant areas of the law, with a publication record in the field being an advantage;
  • An ability to co-ordinate research activity in this area, to work under limited supervision, and to interact appropriately with practitioners and others working in the field;
  • An ability to organise and deal efficiently with administrative matters;
  • An ability and willingness to work collaboratively and collegially with colleagues;
  • Expertise in a relevant foreign language would be an advantage;
  • Some experience in working with databases would also be desirable.
This is a fixed-term (12 months) research post with no teaching duties. It is available immediately on a part-time basis (equivalent to three to four days per week) with the possibility of flexible working hours. A pro-rated salary based upon a full-time equivalent of £25,000 pa is expected.

Bilingual Tobacco Treatment Specialist-- Boston, MA

JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. (JSI) a Boston-based non-profit, healthcare research and consulting firm seeks a qualified candidate for the Smokers’ Helpline and QuitWorks Program.

The Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) works flexible hours "as needed". Position requires bi-lingual Spanish/English speaking fluency. The TTS provides telephone-based tobacco treatment services through the Smoker's Helpline for the Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire Tobacco Control Programs. The Helpline hours of operation are Monday - Thursday, 9:00am - 8:30pm, Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm and Saturdays 11:00am - 3:00pm. Candidates are not guaranteed a specific number of hours to work. Shift differential is offered for positions with evening hours.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key functions:
• Provide proactive tobacco screening and treatment services to callers of varied socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds who are seeking treatment.
• Follow evidence-based counseling protocols utilized by the Helpline, incorporating motivational interviewing techniques.
• Monitor the status of counseling clients and update clinical supervisor on a regular basis.
• Complete accurate data entry for all service activities using our web-based database.
• Participate in regular clinical supervision, staff meetings, and in-service training sessions.
• Participate in program evaluation, outreach and promotional activities as needed.
• Conduct administrative tasks as requested to support program operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Undergraduate degree required, preferably in health education, counseling, social work or a related field.
• Previous experience in tobacco treatment required. Tobacco treatment certification preferred.

Angola Research Capacity Building Advisor

PSI seeks a Research Capacity Building Advisor (RCBA) as part of a program with multiple health interventions, namely in the area of HIV, malaria and diarrhea prevention. Working with the HIV and Child Survival Departments, the RCBA will lead key processes such as population segmentation, testing of communications materials and monitoring and evaluation processes in-line with PSI’s methodologies. The Advisor will also lead the recruitment and training of an accomplished team of researchers to serve the Angola operation longer-term. Additionally the position will be responsible for working with technical department heads to translate research into actionable programmatic inputs and the coordinated dissemination of research outputs to stakeholders and partners. The emphasis in this program is on the development of data for management decision making, completing research work of high quality on a regular basis which serves to inform better project implementation and resource allocation. The RCBA is responsible for following the standard tools and methodologies of the global PSI/Research team and will be expected to participate in relevant PSI/Research meetings and workshops.

The RCBA will be based in Luanda, Angola with anticipated funding for two years and will report to the PSI Country Representative. Anticipated start date will be November / December, 2012.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Strengthen the capacity of, and transfer skills to, PSI/Angola’s research team to independently implement, manage, and improve quantitative research activities by providing technical assistance in areas of research design, sampling strategy, data analysis, and dissemination of results to internal and external stakeholders  Provide technical assistance in the design of qualitative studies, including the development of communication concepts and pretest of communication strategies  Provide technical assistance to PSI/Angola’s research team to use mapping activities to measure coverage and access to PSI products, as well as helping to enhance reporting of PSI field activities through mapping  Strengthen the quality of the MIS system for the platform and supervise the constant reporting from and to internal and external audiences.  Increase the capacity of, and provide technical support to, PSI/Angola program staff to build their skills in interpreting research results and using a research-to-action approach to guide programmatic decisions and activities  Develop and implement a training curriculum to strengthen identified gaps, along with a benchmarked calendar of implementation  Develop annual research plans based on program requirements  Assist with study implementation, including study design, data analysis, report writing and dissemination (through publications, presentations and workshops)  Represent PSI/Angola to high-level partners, including donors and the Government of Angola

QUALIFICATIONS:
 Master’s Degree in public health, behavioral sciences, population studies, psychology communication or marketing; PhD preferred  5+ years experience in the design, management, analysis, and dissemination of behavioral research in public health  Experience in the implementation of a wide range of quantitative and qualitative methods  Advanced statistical analysis of health survey data and strong multi-variate analysis skills preferred  Experience in capacity building or training in foreign settings  Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent studies  Demonstrated ability to inform programmatic decisions using research results  Experience working in developing countries and/or situations of political sensitivity

The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of SPSS and/or STATA programming; ability to train, manage and develop research staff in cross-cultural settings; strong monitoring and evaluation research experience with programmatic implementation, demonstrated experience of capacity building, written and spoken Spanish or Portuguese, strong writing skills; the ability to work closely with program staff to deliver actionable and insightful research outputs; excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated experience of positive governmental relations. Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in resource poor settings, knowledge of public health issues, familiarity with the international donor community and experience using PDAs for data collection.

Position Description:

Works closely with senior research staff to develop, implement, manage and/or analyze research studies. For this position we are especially interested in someone who has good SAS programming and statistical analysis skills.

  • Work closely with senior research staff to conduct research studies by taking the lead in one or more major research activities (e.g., site training, protocol development, project management, study implementation, data analysis, data monitoring, data management, clinical monitoring, paper/report writing).
  • Represent FHI at developing country project sites, regulatory meetings, donor meetings and professional meetings as needed.
  • Provide technical assistance to Research Assistants, interns, in-country colleagues and others as needed.
  • Responsible for study-specific reporting and tracking of key indicators for evaluation of site performance and/or data quality.
  • Ensure compliance of assigned studies with Good Clinical Practice’s (GCP’s), FDA, FHI policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) or other standards as appropriate.
