Associate Professor in Theoretical Physics, Complex Materials and Geological Systems
Job description
The Department of Physics at the University of Oslo invites applicants for an Associate professorship in theoretical physics in the Advanced Materials and Complex Systems/Physics of Geological Processes (AMCS/PGP) collaboration at the University of Oslo. Preference will be given to applicants experienced with the application of physics to Earth sciences. The successful candidate is expected to enhance the quality of the AMCS/PGP group and actively contribute to its research and teaching. AMCS/PGP attempts to bridge the gap between physics and geology. Geological processes such as deformation, transport and growth-dissolution processes can be studied using methods recently developed in physics to bridge the gap between field oriented studies and experiments, computer modeling and theory.
Current research themes include
- Deformation: Fracturing, plastic deformation, fault related processes.
- Fluid migration: Fracturing assisted fluid migration, flow in porous media, tight rocks
- Processes near interfaces: Friction, dissolution of stressed solids, transport near interfaces, nanoscale processes, atomistic modeling.
The successful candidate should have a broad theoretical and computational physics background and be able to apply a variety of theoretical methods to problems of interest to AMCS/PGP and to substantially enhance the level of theoretical work at AMCS/PGP. It is important that the successful candidate is able to collaborate with the current scientific staff in the AMCS/PGP group, on research projects and on joint long-term grant applications. It is also important that the candidate will strengthen our collaboration with other groups, external or internal to the Department.

The latter area employs 4 professors, 1 associate professor, 1 professor emeritus, 1 professor II, 3 post doc. students, 10 Ph.D. students, 5 master students and 3 technicians and is organized in two research groups; SiteDel andPharmaLuxLab. The current position is affiliated with the latter group.
The Department offers courses in pharmaceutics at bachelor, master- and ph.d levels, including biopharmaceutics and production of non-sterile and sterile preparations.
The overall aim for the research in pharmaceutics is to develop nano- and microstructured drug formulations and new formulation technologies for the delivery of biopharmaceuticals and other active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). The research can be defined under the heading: “Development of nano- and microstructured drug formulations and new formulation technologies for improved functionality in drug delivery”.The main emphasize is improved functionality of drug delivery systems intended for the treatment of cancer and for the treatment of a broad spectrum of bacterial, fungal and viral infections. Research of this type presupposes novel strategies and requires expertise to be drawn from across the boundaries between the traditional disciplines of science. The research groups exploit a multitude of experimental methods and techniques. The experimental methodologies involve thermodynamic measurements (differential scanning calorimetry), dynamic light scattering measurements (particle size and charge), rheological and viscosimetric measurements, spectroscopic techniques (fluorescence, UV-Vis spectroscopy), freeze drying processes, microscopy (atomic force microscopy, light microscopy), spray drying technology as well as quantitative analytical techniques (HPLC, UHPLC, HPTLC, GC/GC-MS) and conventional processing and characterization methods for tablets and pellets. The overall techniques cover a size range from millimeter to the nanometer, and solid, semisolid and liquid dosage forms. The groups have a broad national- and international collaborative network within academia, pharmaceutical industry and hospitals.
The successful applicant should contribute to a strengthening of the research within“Development of nano- and microstructured drug formulations and new formulation technologies for improved functionality in drug delivery”.
Information about the research groupThe position is affiliated with the PharmaLuxLab research group. The main emphazis is development and characterization of delivery systems based on polymeric micelles and cyclodextrins. The clinical applications are mainly cancer- and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT/aPDT). The primary sites for drug release are the oral cavity, skin (i.e., wounds) and tumors. The systems could however, also be applicable in other contexts including delivery of biomacromolecules.
Specialities:
- Photoreactivity of drugs and drug formulations
- Solubilization technology
- Nanovehicles such as cyclodextrins and polymeric micelles
- Solid state characterization (DSC, color measurements, hygroscopicity)
- Production of solid foams
- Formulation of supersaturated systems
Applicants, who at the time of appointment cannot provide documentary evidence of formal educational/ pedagogical qualifications, must acquire such qualifications during a period of two years.
Specific information about the positionThe research group wants to strengthen their research in selected areas and therefore candidates with a background in one or more of the following research fields are desired:
- Solubilization technology by application of nanovehicles and biopolymers
- Formulation of biomacromolecules
- Formulation of supersaturated systems
Ability and preference for working in teams are highly valued qualities and should be documented. The successful applicant should document that he/she has a national- and international collaborative network within academia and preferentially also involving pharmaceutical industry and hospitals.
Applicants are required to outline one or several research projects and show how these are expected to strengthen the scientific activities within the research group.
As a general rule an interview will be used in the appointment process, and it may be appropriate to require trial lectures. The basis for assessment will be the scholarly production of the applicant, other qualifications, pedagogical or educational, the applicant’s qualifications within leadership and administration as well as the general personal suitability.
