Department

BBC Global News has a growing portfolio of Future Media activities developed and managed by a core future media team, working closely with the language services and the English news and non-news production units, across World Service and elsewhere within the BBC. The role is expected to evolve as future media strategy develops.

Role

Working as part of a technical team, the Delivery Specialist will have responsibility for the solving of technical problems related to the delivery of online and other services supported by the Future Media team. Problems and requests may be logged by language services responsible for creating content, and these will come to the Delivery Specialist directly, through email to a group address, or through the service desks. The Delivery Specialist will advise the language sections accordingly, and will also have third-line support responsibilities for calls logged through service desk and relating to Global News future media activities. Other problems and requests will come from members of the public, and the Delivery Specialist will be expected to respond to these and ensure content is available to the widest audience possible.

On a rota basis, the Delivery Specialist will be required to provide out-of-hours support for future media activities. Editorial judgement will be expected from the Delivery Specialist in prioritising services and activities, and minimising downtime for online services.

The Delivery Specialist will be responsible for the installation and management of servers that are used for content production and media streaming tasks. Servers under the management of the Delivery Specialist may be either available on the internet or internally on the BBC network. Additionally, the Delivery Specialist will have responsibility for the scheduling of audio and video capture for the internet, including the management of a World Service bespoke scheduling system, and ensuring the online output of World Service language services in multiple formats.

The Delivery Specialist will deal with third parties chosen by Future Media for online delivery of services, and will be expected to manage existing third parties as well as introducing new companies and services and managing their delivery. The role will involve applying expertise in the delivery of online services using a wide range of suppliers.

The Delivery Specialist will be involved in Future Media projects, and will be expected to take an active part in delivering products and services required by the various project teams in World Service Future Media. Projects will also be undertaken in the Delivery team, and the Delivery Specialist will be expected to take responsibility for projects that will have an effect on World Service output
