Canada Research Chairs

The University of Alberta seeks outstanding researchers to be nominated for the Canada Research Chairs Program Tier 1 and Tier 2 awards.
In 2000, the Government of Canada created a new permanent program to establish 2000 research professorships - Canada Research Chairs - in universities across the country. The Canada Research Chairs Program invests $300 million a year to attract and retain some of the world's most accomplished and promising minds.
The University of Alberta seeks candidates to nominate for Canada Research Chair awards at both Tier 1 and Tier 2 levels.
  • Tier 1 Chairs, tenable for seven years and renewable, are for outstanding researchers acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their fields. For each Tier 1 Chair, the university receives $200,000 annually for seven years.
  • Tier 2 Chairs, tenable for five years and renewable once, are for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field. For each Tier 2 Chair, the university receives $100,000 annually for five years.
Applications are encouraged from candidates with interest and expertise in areas of importance to the strategic development of research at the institution. Candidates should demonstrate the fit of the proposed chair with the university's strategic research plan, and indicate how the proposed chair will contribute to the attainment of the university's objectives.
The University of Alberta is one of Canada's foremost research intensive universities, with over $513 million annually in sponsored research revenue and undergraduate and graduate enrollment exceeding 37,000. With a population of over one million people, the greater Edmonton area offers a diverse array of cultural and sporting activities year-round, with a strong focus on the arts and a vibrant community spirit. Located only a few hours away from the spectacular Canadian Rockies, Edmontonians have quick and easy access to some of the finest skiing, kayaking, cycling, camping, backpacking and fishing in the world.
