PhD position in biomedical statistics

Institute of Clinical Medicine
PhD position in biomedical statistics
There is a vacant PhD position (government position code SKO 1378) in biomedical statistics at SERAF – Norwegian Center for Addiction Research, Institute of Clinical Medicine, The Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo.
ITN SEWPROF: Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher in Environmental Sciences (ESR10)
A fully funded Marie Curie Early Career Researcher position is available for a fixed term of three years to undertake research on time series analysis as a tool for investigating prescription drugs abuse. This position is part of the European Marie Curie ‘SEWPROF’ Initial Training Network.
Description
Several drugs prescribed by doctors to patients with a variety of maladies can also be abused. Opioids (for pain and substitution treatment) and benzodiazepines (for insomnia and anxiety) are safe and efficient drugs, but also have a value on the open drug scene indicating that they also are drugs of abuse. However, we do not know to what extent these drugs are abused. By analysing the day-to-day weekly variation by time series analysis we hypothesize that is possible to estimate the rate of abuse of these drugs. By comparing these analyses with data from other sources we aim to shed light on problematic use of potentially beneficial therapies.
Eligibility
The successful candidate will have a good degree in a relevant discipline related to biomedical statistics. It is expected that the successful applicant would register for a PhD degree and will undertake research at more than one institution and be exposed to more than one research environment and working culture including public and private research institutions.
The successful candidate must satisfy the eligibility requirements for an Early Stage Researcher under the European Commission Framework 7 Early Stage Training Scheme:

Early Stage Researchers must be (at the time of recruitment by the host organisation): in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is envisaged’
‘Conditions of Mobility of Researchers
Researchers can be of any nationality. They are required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up their appointment. At the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date’.
Benefits
A full employment contract, benefits associated with Marie Curie Fellowships including full social security, mobility and travel allowances, and a career exploratory allowance.
Additional job details
This position is offered in the scope of the European Marie Curie ‘SEWPROF’ Initial Training Network.
SEWPROF’s main objective is to provide an integrated approach towards public health monitoring at a community level based on innovative sewage epidemiology techniques. The approach will deliver real-time profiling of community-wide health and lifestyle through the analysis of human biomarkers in wastewater using a wide-range of methods including hyphenated mass spectrometry techniques, bioanalytical techniques and real-time sensing
SEWPROF combines training through research with a carefully designed, strongly interlinked and dedicated programme of research projects. These are critical for the development of high calibre scientists both in terms of skills and knowledge. 15 individual personalised but complementary research projects (falling within the frame of the research topics) defined by the network will be undertaken by 11 ESRs and 4 ERs at 16 leading European institutions.  Each trainee will have a secondment and/or visits to different institutions to promote transnational, interdisciplinary and intersectoral training. Structured network-wide training courses will be provided by experts within the field and will be closely interlinked with research. Trainees will be also asked to establish their Personal Career Development Plan which will address generic, transferable and task specific skills training needs for each trainee on an individual basis.
