Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy). The Human Resources unit is responsible for the Laboratory’s staff of approx. 1500 persons from over 70 nations and at all levels working at its sites. 

We are looking for an experienced HR professional who is excited by the challenge of providing an excellent service in a stimulating international environment. Reporting to the Senior HR Officer, the HR Officer will be part of a team responsible for delivering a high quality, comprehensive HR and recruitment service.

Main duties are the following:

  • Independently manage the full recruitment process in close cooperation with the hiring manager, including:
    • identifying requirements, producing and placing vacancy advertisements;
    • setting up and carrying out the selection process;
    • pre-screening and interviewing candidates using customized assessment tools;
    • negotiating employment offers;
    • preparing contracts and related documents;
    • supporting the integration of new staff;
  • Represent EMBL at international recruiting events;
  • Participate in projects to further develop internal processes to ensure that recruitment strategies, procedures and techniques are effective and up-to-date;
  • Work very closely with the Human Resources Officers Personnel Management in supporting dedicated organizational units and/or outstations;
  • Contribute to the overall performance of the HR function by proposing solutions and participating in projects and by liaising with other functions in the administration as well as external service suppliers.

Qualifications and Experience

This exciting and challenging opportunity will suit HR professionals who can demonstrate credibility, the ability to develop strong relationships and a track record of delivering in multicultural environments. The successful candidate must have a university degree and training in human resources management and/or experience in a relevant field such as public/business administration. 

A minimum of 3 years' experience in general Personnel Management as Human Resources Officer or Adviser plus solid experience in recruitment, ideally at international level, is essential. S/he should have a conscientious attitude, and the ability to prioritise tasks and work independently and under the pressure of fixed time schedules. Excellent organisational skills, very good analytical skills and the ability to conduct independent research are required. 

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to work in a team as well as high customer orientation to provide a quality service for staff at all levels in the organisation are essential. Good computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, especially Excel, are mandatory. Experience of working with e-recruitment systems and ERP systems (e.g. SAP HR) will be an advantage. Excellent spoken and written English and a good working knowledge of German and/or French are essential.
