Research Assistant/Associate in Design for Emerging Technologies

University of Cambridge -The IdEAS project

The IdEAS project is funded by the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council with the aim of determining how design methods can enable innovation within emerging technologies. A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate to work on the project, developing a framework of design principles (e.g. modularity, redundancy, scalability, resilience, etc.) that apply to many different types of system (mechanical, computational, biological, organisational, etc.). The work will require (1) identifying and relating the different design principles, and (2) studying how they are employed in different types of system. The research methods to be used include literature reviews (across multiple disciplines), expert interviews and industry case studies.
The interdisciplinary nature of the project means that applicants from a broad range of backgrounds will be considered. Candidates should be in possession of a doctoral degree (or be in the final stages of obtaining one) and should have established a strong publication record. Preference will be given to those candidates who can demonstrate a systems focus, an aptitude for conceptual work and the confidence to network within academic and commercial organisations. The project provides a budget for the team members to undertake training relevant to the research and for their career development. There is also a budget for conference expenses and travel to visit/host project partners at the University of Bristol (UK), Technical University of Delft (Netherlands) and Simon Fraser University (Canada). Other partners will be identified during the project.
The position is available for a duration of two years, with the possibility of extension for up to three further years. The successful applicant is expected to commence work on the project on 1st September 2013. There is some scope for flexibility on the start date, but a later start may reduce the contract duration.
The salary range for Research Associates is £27,854 - £36,298, and the salary range for Research Assistants is£24,049 - £27,047.
