Director, Applications Management


Application Management plays a critical role in the design, testing, and improvement of applications that form part of the consolidated IT services for the University of Alberta and client users. Reporting to the Associate Executive Director of AICT, the Director of Application Management will be responsible for the design, development, maintenance, management and oversight throughout an applications lifecycle. 
The Director of Application Management will work with clients to make decisions concerning purchase or development of applications specifically for the University’s requirements and be responsible for the development of operational models for the testing and transition phases when an application goes live. The scope includes enterprise-wide and business critical applications, and research specific applications for small research teams.
The Director of Application Management will:
  • Negotiate, implement, and monitor service level agreements, seeking to continually and proactively improve service delivery for the end user
  • Manage and negotiate vendor contracts for development, support and maintenance, and where necessary manage vendors to meet their commitments
  • Provide the necessary technical training for both analysts and application end users
  • Oversee all aspects of application management with standard IT service frameworks like ITIL
The position oversees the following units: Application Development, Application Support, Quality Assurance and Testing, User Experience and Interface Design, Vendor Management and Integration of Purchased Applications (Internally hosted, Software as a Service).
These units are responsible for requirements management, architecture, coding, testing, tracking, quality control and improvement, and release management. The Director of Application Management will be expected to manage a projected budget of $2 million and a staff of four to six team leaders and 30 support employees.
The Director of Applications Management will be responsible for developing the unit over the next twelve to 24 months. The unit will be responsible to plan, implement, control, review, and audit applications to meet current and future University business requirements. This includes an effort to consolidate and optimise the numerous applications that exist in faculties and departments. The Director will identify and assess the risk to the University, and prioritise solutions and strategies to develop a campus wide policy for dealing with legacy programmes and shadow systems that presently exist on campus in unknown quantities and qualities.
 Skills and Qualifications:
  • Relevant Bachelor's degree and 10 years of relevant experience or, a relevant Master's degree and 7 years of relevant experience;
  • Experience in information technology, specifically five years in operations/IT operating;
  • Experience in personnel management (direct and matrix);
  • Experience in budget and material resources management;
  • Knowledge of finance is desirable;
  • Knowledge of ITIL an asset;
  • Strong leadership, sense of initiative, autonomy and good communication skills.
This full-time continuing position is in accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer agreement and offers a comprehensive benefits package and annual salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
