Director of Cultural & Academic Support


The University of Alberta, Faculty of Law, is accepting applications for the 2012-13 academic year for a Director of Cultural & Academic Support, an important leadership position in the faculty.  The Director will provide assistance and guidance to all students to ensure a welcoming and supportive learning environment.
In particular, the Director will be responsible for:
  • Providing cultural support and advice to Aboriginal students in a renewed Indigenous Law Program
  • Providing support and advice to JD and JD/MBA students, concerning academic, personal or financial matters affecting their academic performance and personal wellness
  • Providing support and advice to students undertaking either an international exchange or visiting the faculty on an exchange
  • Developing and managing a comprehensive student engagement plan as well as a comprehensive retention plan that are inclusive of all students
  • Preparing and delivering needs assessments and gap analyses to determine best practices for curriculum development with relation to Aboriginal and equity-seeking groups
Overall the Director will provide a broad range of guidance to a diverse student body.
The Director will be responsible to teach at least one credit course, specific to the successful candidate's area of expertise, to be determined in conjunction with the Vice Dean.
JD (LL.B) degree required. Membership or eligibility for membership in a law society of a Canadian jurisdiction preferred. Experience in a management position within a university environment and previous experience in a student academic services environment is also preferred.
In accordance with the Sessional and Other Temporary Staff agreement, this position has an initial appointment of two years, with the possibility of extension, and offers a comprehensive benefits package and annual salary range, dependent on qualifications and experience.
