The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is seeking to appoint an outstanding candidate for the position of Head of Applied Social Studies. Professorial title may be available to a successful candidate who is judged by the interview panel to meet University Professorial criteria.
The Head of Applied Social Studies will lead a new department team which has just been formed to accommodate the growth of a number of new disciplines within the Faculty: Sociology, Criminology, Forensics and Fashion. Undergraduate provision in these disciplines is being established on a rolling programme: Sociology in 2010; Criminology in 2011, Fashion in 2012 and Forensic Studies in 2013.
As Head of Department you will offer academic leadership to the staff of the new Department by way of strong and effective management and communication skills along with the ability to take forward and transform ideas into action. You will foster an environment within which teaching, research and knowledge exchange activities of national and international importance will flourish and you will make a significant individual contribution to the department’s research profile in one of the areas of expertise related to the Sociology unit of assessment.
As our ideal candidate, you will have subject or programme management experience, including curriculum design, together with a proven record of effective leadership. You will have teaching experience in a relevant discipline at undergraduate level and ideally at postgraduate level.
