The Student Life Office is the first point of contact for students and therefore a strong commitment to customer service and excellent communication skills are essential.  A high standard of literacy, proficiency in the use of standard MS Office applications, and excellent organisational skills are also required.  Building effective working relationships with a variety of contacts and working as a team are essential aspects of the post.

The English Section at the Faculty of Teacher and Interpreter Education offers English modules (English 1: 1-7 and 5-10; English 2: 1-7 and 5-10) which lead to a BA in Education. The degree qualifies students for teaching in Norwegian primary (Year 1-7) and secondary (Year 8-10) schools. The College also offers a largely web-based distance-learning course for English teachers. The Faculty of Teacher and Interpreter Education has prioritized English studies, which will allow the successful candidate(s) to contribute to shaping English Language studies during a time of exciting changes for teacher training in Norway. The English Section currently consists of 3 Associate Professors and 2 Lecturers.


Responsibilities:
  • Instruction and course development in English Language and TESOL, marking, examination, and student supervision according to current course requirements.
  • The Faculty has a strong foundation in professional practice in schools, and the link between theory and practice is important to the Faculty’s research profile. The successful candidate(s) must be able to develop this profile further.
  • In addition to the regular study programmes and distance courses, the Faculty participates in research and development projects in collaboration with local schools. The successful candidate(s) will take part in the development of new courses, and contribute to the research and development of projects in the subject area.
Qualifications:
A Norwegian PhD (or foreign equivalent PhD) in English Language and/or TESOL is required for appointment as Associate Professor, in addition to relevant research and teaching experience. A Norwegian MA (or foreign equivalent MA) in English Language and/or TESOL is required for appointment as Lecturer, in addition to relevant research and teaching experience.
If there are no fully-qualified candidates for the post as Associate Professor, a candidate may be appointed for a three-year temporary position. The candidate’s qualifications will then be reconsidered and a permanent position may be offered, without the post being re-advertised, if the essential criteria for appointment as Associate Professor are fulfilled (cf. Act Relating to Universities and University Colleges § 6.5 (1)). To be considered for appointment, a certificate of completed teaching practice and training is normally required. Additional requirements include:
  • An academic degree in English Language and/or TESOL.
  • Relevant research and popularization experience.
  • Teaching experience from Norwegian primary or secondary school level and/or other relevant institutions of education.
  • Experience in using ICT in an educational context is essential.
  • The University College wishes to strengthen teaching in foreign languages; formal qualifications in languages other than English, such as French, German and Spanish, are desirable.

In early 2011, DMI launched the world’s first scientific trial to examine how many lives can be saved using mass media campaigns alone. This major, 4-year project is underway in Burkina Faso, West Africa, in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).  Our mathematical model predicts that if we could conduct campaigns in 12 countries over the next 10 years, we should save one million lives. We are looking for an Executive Assistant of the highest-calibre to help us achieve that goal.

S/he will be London-based, and required to provide comprehensive administrative support to senior management staff as well as project staff in the field. S/he will be responsible for maintaining efficient office systems and will assist DMI’s CEO with PA functions.

The successful candidate will have at least one year’s experience in administration, be highly intelligent and organised, with excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office computer packages and IT more generally is very important. Imperial College London has been world leading in producing micromachined seismometers with unprecedented resolution. We now have an opportunity to apply this technology on the 2016 InSight mission to Mars, currently under final review at NASA.
A research position is available to participate in the building of the seismic system for InSight. Work will consist of design, fabrication and testing of the silicon microseismometers that will be delivered to Mars in 2016. Work will involve collaboration and travel to our UK partner, Oxford University, as well as to our international partners at the French Space Agency (CNES) in Toulouse and at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Research Associate Population Genomics of Emerging Infections

Applications are invited to join the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology located at the St Mary's campus, Paddington. The department is based within a five star research institute equipped with the latest technologies and facilities. DIDE is arguably the largest grouping of infectious disease epidemiologists in the world with a very wide range of skills represented, from experimental studies on bacterial/fungal pathogens, through population genetics and infectious disease modelling to field work on emerging infectious disease. As such, the Department offers excellent research facilities and a friendly, intellectually stimulating, working environment.
Emerging fungal infections are attracting increasing scientific and policy interest as their impact on human and ecosystem health becomes more pronounced (see Nature 484 2012). This Research Associate post is funded by a 3-year MRC project grant, entitled 'An evolutionary population genomics approach to determine the genetic basis of virulence in the pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus neoformans', and seeks to understand the evolutionary basis underlying this pathogen's emergence as a leading cause of human disease in Africa and South East Asia.
The post holder will join a multidisciplinary team of researchers that are using statistical genetic and functional genomic approaches to identify the patterns and processes that have led to contemporary distributions of genetic diversity for emerging pathogenic fungi, with a focus on Cryptococcus. The post-holder will have a key role in study design and will develop a state-of-the-art bioinformatics pipeline for assembling next-generation sequence data from a global panel of environmental and clinical Cryptococcus isolates. These data will be used for statistical genetic, phylodynamic and evolutionary analyses with the ultimate goal of defining the subset of genetic diversity that is associated with virulence and spatial-expansion of key lineages of Cryptococcus. Key responsibilities will be to develop cutting-edge approaches to managing large eukaryote population genomics datasets, and to liaise with our international collaborators in order to effectively share and curate genome-data.
The successful candidate will have a strong bioinformatic, evolutionary or statistical genetics background with a PhD degree or equivalent in a relevant quantitative subject.
This post is a full time and fixed term until 31st July 2015.

The Research Manager will be responsible for managing both the quantitative and qualitative research involved in DMI projects, and for designing the research aspects of new projects. We recognise that most applicants will not have both a quantitative and qualitative research background. Our priority is quantitative skills: academic and practical experience in the design, management and analysis of quantitative surveys.
Strong written skills are essential, as evidenced by a publication record in peer reviewed academic journals. Applicants should have a research-focussed PhD or equivalent, followed by significant work experience in developing countries. Practical experience of using statistical analysis and database software is also necessary.

You will assist in a broad programme of research and development of projects relating to the identification of biomarkers in skin scarring. This post will include processing and storage of biological samples received from the UK and our international collaborators from Europe, Caribbean, Australia, Asia and Africa. A particularly important area of research will be working with cells as well as tissue and their profiling for identifying susceptibility to skin scarring.
You should have relevant experience in subjects related to cellular/molecular biology (previous experience in skin biology is desirable). You should also have experience of working with biological tissue.

Applications are invited for a bioinformatician/computational statistician to work within the International Health Research Group at the Department of Public Health and Primary Care. The group is co-located across the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (WTSI). The International Health Research Group assesses the burden and aetiology of infectious and non-communicable diseases among populations integrating principles and procedures underlying epidemiology, genomics and public health. The group has a strong interest in exploring epidemiological transitions in low-income countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
The successful candidate will be expected to improve and implement analysis pipelines to carry out population genetics and association analyses of rare and common genetic variants (SNPs, sequence variants and CNVs) in population cohorts across sub-Saharan Africa. The post holder will interact with WTSI teams, as well as international research groups, and support the work of group members.
Applicants should have a postgraduate degree (masters/PhD) in computational statistics, genetics, bioinformatics, computational biology or a related discipline, and comprehensive knowledge of relevant algorithms and software tools. Demonstrated Shell scripting and programming skills in Perl, Python and/or C/C++ are required. The post-holder will also need relevant experience in the application of statistical methods to the analysis of genetic data. It is essential that the candidate has clear communication skills with the ability to present methodologies and results succinctly.
Applicable knowledge of statistical tools such as R environment and specific technical products (E.g. PLINK, EMMAX, GATK, SAMtools, Imputev2, SHAPEIT) would be an advantage, as would experience in working with whole-genome/exome sequence data.

The role is available for three years in the first instance. The CSAE is ideally positioned to lead the integration of HIV economic research into a broader policy framework which reaches outside the existing, largely donor-based funding channels.
The successful applicant will work as the junior member of a team led by the CSAE Senior Researcher in the Economics of HIV, and by the CSAE Director Professor Paul Collier. The team will work to build a network of collaborative research into economic aspects of HIV, to which other institutions, such as the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the HIV Modelling Consortium led by Imperial College, London will also contribute.
The overall objective of this programme of research is to help develop economic approaches that will improve resource allocation for the more effective tackling of the challenges posed by HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular focus on the increasingly important area of the allocation of domestic resources and hence on decisions for which Finance as well as Health Ministries are responsible.

Project Management

A full time Research Assistant is required to support the London office of the International Initiative for Impact Evaluations (3ie) which is hosted by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. 3ie is an organization devoted to improving lives through better policies, programmes and projects which are designed and implemented based on evidence drawn from high quality impact evaluations.
The post is based at the London International Development Centre (LIDC), which facilitates interdisciplinary research and training to tackle complex problems in international development by bringing together social and natural scientists from across the University of London's six Bloomsbury Colleges. It manages a growing portfolio of international research programmes, training initiatives, conferences and publications for over 1,700 members and development partners.
The ideal candidate will have a postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline and experience of working in one or more of rigorous impact evaluation, systematic reviews and the use of evidence to inform policy.
This is a full time appointment to September 2013 in the first instance but with possibility for extension. Based within the IT Services Department and reporting to, and deputising for, the Head of Digital Channels & Strategy, the postholder will be responsible for the technical functionality of the School's core digital communications channels and websites.
The role holder will support, maintain and develop the School's content management system and other web-based systems as required.  S/he will also lead and implement web development projects whilst providing day to day support for the technical functionality of the School's websites.
