The Department of Statistical Sciences at the University of Cape Town is responsible for lecturing and research in Statistical Sciences. These are the disciplines variously known as Statistics (and all sub-disciplines such as Biostatistics, Biometrics, Bioinformatics, Econometrics and Statistical Ecology), Operations Research, Management Science, Quantitative Methods and Decision Science, and Statistical Sciences. The Department has a strong record of broad interdisciplinary work in its teaching and research.
The majority of the undergraduate students enrolled in departmental statistics courses are registered in the Faculty of Commerce, while postgraduate students register in either the Science or Commerce Faculty. The Department offers two undergraduate statistics majors: Mathematical Statistics and Business/Applied Statistics. At the postgraduate level we offer Honours, Master's and PhD degrees in the field of either Statistical Sciences or Operations Research.
We are looking for candidates with a strong theoretical Statistics background or for candidates who specialise in one of the fields of Statistical Ecology, Bioinformatics or Financial and Econometric Modelling.

- A PhD in Statistics, Statistical Ecology, Bioinformatics or Financial and Econometric Modelling (consideration will also be given to PhD's in other related fields)
- A strong track record of supervision, research and publication
- Ability and interest to teach statistics at undergraduate and postgraduate level
- Ability and interest to supervise research at postgraduate level
- Strong leadership qualities
- Highly recognised research profile, nationally and internationally.
- Teaching and developing undergraduate as well as postgraduate Statistics courses in the Department
- Supervising Honours and postgraduate students
- Pursuing an active research programme and raising required funding
- Mentoring junior members of staff with respect to their research careers
- Course convening, departmental and faculty administrative duties.
