Associate Professor/Lecturer in English Language and/or TESOL

Sør-Trøndelag University College, Faculty of Teacher and Interpreter Education in Trondheim, Norway is seeking applicants for Associate Professor/Lecturer faculty position(s) in English Language and/or TESOL. The English Section at the Faculty of Teacher and Interpreter Education offers English modules (English 1: 1-7 and 5-10; English 2: 1-7 and 5-10) which lead to a BA in Education. The degree qualifies students for teaching in Norwegian primary (Year 1-7) and secondary (Year 8-10) schools. The College also offers a largely web-based distance-learning course for English teachers. The Faculty of Teacher and Interpreter Education has prioritized English studies, which will allow the successful candidate(s) to contribute to shaping English Language studies during a time of exciting changes for teacher training in Norway. The English Section currently consists of 3 Associate Professors and 2 Lecturers.


Responsibilities:
  • Instruction and course development in English Language and TESOL, marking, examination, and student supervision according to current course requirements.
  • The Faculty has a strong foundation in professional practice in schools, and the link between theory and practice is important to the Faculty’s research profile. The successful candidate(s) must be able to develop this profile further.
  • In addition to the regular study programmes and distance courses, the Faculty participates in research and development projects in collaboration with local schools. The successful candidate(s) will take part in the development of new courses, and contribute to the research and development of projects in the subject area.
Qualifications:
A Norwegian PhD (or foreign equivalent PhD) in English Language and/or TESOL is required for appointment as Associate Professor, in addition to relevant research and teaching experience. A Norwegian MA (or foreign equivalent MA) in English Language and/or TESOL is required for appointment as Lecturer, in addition to relevant research and teaching experience.
If there are no fully-qualified candidates for the post as Associate Professor, a candidate may be appointed for a three-year temporary position. The candidate’s qualifications will then be reconsidered and a permanent position may be offered, without the post being re-advertised, if the essential criteria for appointment as Associate Professor are fulfilled (cf. Act Relating to Universities and University Colleges § 6.5 (1)). To be considered for appointment, a certificate of completed teaching practice and training is normally required. Additional requirements include:
  • An academic degree in English Language and/or TESOL.
  • Relevant research and popularization experience.
  • Teaching experience from Norwegian primary or secondary school level and/or other relevant institutions of education.
  • Experience in using ICT in an educational context is essential.
  • The University College wishes to strengthen teaching in foreign languages; formal qualifications in languages other than English, such as French, German and Spanish, are desirable.
Applications will be assessed by a search committee who will consider the candidates’ formal qualifications, publications, research and relevant teaching experience. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview and will be asked to prepare a short lecture intended for a student audience. The interview panel will focus on the candidate’s personal skills, the ability to work constructively and effectively as part of a team and enthusiasm for the role. Applications should include a cover letter that details the candidate’s academic qualifications, relevant teaching and work experience, research, and popularization. Applicants should provide the names and addresses of two references who can be contacted prior to the interview.


In addition to the cover letter, the candidate must post the following within the application deadline:
  • 5 copies of a complete CV.
  • 5 verified copies of each relevant diploma and certificate.
  • 3 copies of no more than 10 academic papers, published or unpublished, to be read by the search committee. The candidate should attach a list of these academic papers.
  • 3 copies of a brief description of the candidate’s most important academic papers that the search committee should focus on specifically in their assessment.
  • 3 copies of a list of all academic papers specifying where they have been published.
In the case of joint publications, the candidate should clarify his or her own role in producing them.
All foreign qualifications should be approved by NOKUT, The Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (for more information go to http://www.nokut.no/en/), and a letter to that effect must be included in the application. Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in Norway. The successful candidate(s) must be able to speak a Scandinavian language, or be willing to learn Norwegian to a level that can be used for communication in a work setting within three years of employment.

Salary for Associate Professor: Salary Code 1011/1198, LR 24, spine point 57-75 (NOK 468400-655400) or Lecturer: Salary Code 1008, LR 25, spine point 47-70 (NOK 396900-595200). By law, a portion of the salary will be paid to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from salary deductions.
