The Role Working within the Library
Department, you will be responsible for the efficient ordering and
receipt of new books and other library materials. You will also be
responsible for the supervision of library assistants engaged in
acquisitions work. You will be required to assist with the management of
the collections, undertake special projects as required and take part
in other library activities.You will have a qualification in library or
information science and experience of book acquisitions, preferably in
an academic library. Good communication and interpersonal skills
together with the ability to work as part of a team are essential. Some
supervisory experience is desirable.
The Department Goldsmiths Library serves over 8,000 readers: staff and students of Goldsmiths and external users. Its collections cover the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and relate to the teaching and research of the College. In addition to some 300,000 books and 3,600 journals (print and electronic), it contains extensive audiovisual and school practice collections and a growing number of special collections which reflect the College’s interest in the creative and performing arts. Published materials (print, electronic and audiovisual) are catalogued on the Aleph library management system while CALM is used for archival cataloguing. The Library is also responsible for the institutional repository, Goldsmiths Research Online.The Library is housed in the award-winning Rutherford Building, which it shares with IT Services. The building is currently open 24/7 during term time and most of the Easter and Christmas vacations.The Library employs some 67 staff (c43 fte) working in four sections: Reader Services and Systems; Bibliographic Services; Learning and Teaching Support, and Research Support.
