The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) seeks to appoint a dynamic
and visionary leader who will strategically position Wits in the
national and global landscape while retaining and developing its
competitive edge.
The position requires extensive knowledge and experience of the
higher education sector, impeccable academic and research credentials,
strong leadership qualities and proven capacity at executive management
level.
Applicants must possess and demonstrate unquestionable integrity,
standing and accomplishments relevant to a tertiary academic
institution. Essential characteristics for the role of Vice-Chancellor
at Wits are excellent communication skills, public speaking ability,
critical and analytical skills, a quick and decisive management style
and the willingness to appropriately respond to difficult situations as
they arise. The role of the Vice-Chancellor will include a commitment to
the University's transformation agenda, enabling the University to make
a significant contribution to the development of an open and democratic
society based on freedom, equality and human dignity. Applicants must
be academic leaders in terms of qualifications and research.

The appointment is for a 5 year fixed term with possible renewal for a
further and final term in appropriate circumstances. A competitive
remuneration package is offered commensurate with similar positions in
South African Universities. Benefits include an annual performance
related bonus, appropriate leave, provident fund, medical aid,
accommodation, relocation expenses and remission of fees for dependents'
studies as per university policy.
