Research Assistant in Bioinformatics/Computational Statistics University of Cambridge

University of Cambridge -Department of Public Health and Primary Care

Salary: £23,811 - £26,779 pa
Applications are invited for a bioinformatician/computational statistician to work within the International Health Research Group at the Department of Public Health and Primary Care. The group is co-located across the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (WTSI). The International Health Research Group assesses the burden and aetiology of infectious and non-communicable diseases among populations integrating principles and procedures underlying epidemiology, genomics and public health. The group has a strong interest in exploring epidemiological transitions in low-income countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
The successful candidate will be expected to improve and implement analysis pipelines to carry out population genetics and association analyses of rare and common genetic variants (SNPs, sequence variants and CNVs) in population cohorts across sub-Saharan Africa. The post holder will interact with WTSI teams, as well as international research groups, and support the work of group members.
Applicants should have a postgraduate degree (masters/PhD) in computational statistics, genetics, bioinformatics, computational biology or a related discipline, and comprehensive knowledge of relevant algorithms and software tools. Demonstrated Shell scripting and programming skills in Perl, Python and/or C/C++ are required. The post-holder will also need relevant experience in the application of statistical methods to the analysis of genetic data. It is essential that the candidate has clear communication skills with the ability to present methodologies and results succinctly.
Applicable knowledge of statistical tools such as R environment and specific technical products (E.g. PLINK, EMMAX, GATK, SAMtools, Imputev2, SHAPEIT) would be an advantage, as would experience in working with whole-genome/exome sequence data.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.
