Background / General description:
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group is a leader in sustainable investment in emerging markets. IFC promotes private sector development and economic growth to reduce poverty and improve people’s lives. As a key part of our mission, IFC invests in socially responsible private health care organizations in developing countries. In recent years, we have grown to become the world’s largest investor in the private health sector in emerging markets. We have invested $2.5 billion in more than 150 health care companies in 50 countries. Approximately a quarter of these investments are in equity. These projects typically include private hospitals, pharmaceutical production and distribution, diagnostic centers, HMOs and primary care providers.

Duties and Accountabilities:
IFC is seeking to recruit a Private Health Sector Specialist to join our expanding team to focus on our health services investments, such as hospitals, clinics, HMOs, laboratory and diagnostic imaging firms, dental clinics, etc. Please note this role is not focused on pharmaceuticals. Key responsibilities include:

- Participating in business development activities

- Assessing and appraising potential projects and companies that are seeking an investment from IFC – including commercial, operational and service quality aspects

- Supporting the development and implementation of IFC’s health sector strategy

- Contributing to the development and internal and external dissemination of information and knowledge relevant to IFC’s health practice.

- Hiring and supervising consultants where needed to support IFC’s health practice.

- Supervising our health care portfolio of companies with a particular emphasis on value-addition to our clients

- Providing expert advice to clients on key aspects of their operations and performance.

Selection Criteria:
- A deep knowledge of the dynamics of private health sector organizations.

- An advanced degree in health services management or an appropriate combination of training and experience.

- Ability to work across different geographies, cultures and organizations.

- 10+ years’ experience in health care management. Significant international exposure, including experience of working in developing countries, will be a key advantage.

- Experience of medical technology manufacturing and/or distribution would be a plus.

- Board level experience of health care services companies would be an advantage.

- Excellent communication skills in English. Knowledge of another major business language is an advantage.

The successful candidate is likely to have gained their experience within a large commercial health care organization or consultancy organization.
