Research Associate in Applied Maser Spintronics Imperial College London

Imperial College London -Departments of Materials

Salary range: £32,100 to £40,720 per annum
Fixed-Term appointment for up to 36 months
Applications are invited for a Research Associate in the Department of Materials at Imperial College, London to assist in the development of a new type of spintronic device that works like a laser but at microwave frequencies. The focus will be on constructing experimental demonstrators that exploit breakthroughs in advanced materials and physical chemistry made by an inter-disciplinary team comprising several PhD students and faculty members. This work will be done in consultation with industrial partners towards transferring these demonstrators into commercial prototypes and is funded by the EPSRC.
A researcher is sought with a PhD (or equivalent) in physics, astronomy, chemistry, materials or engineering and a passion for constructing experimental hardware and instrumentation. The successful candidate will have a strong record of published research and will be able to provide examples of ingenuity and initiative in several though not necessarily all of:
(1) simulating the optical, electromagnetic, thermal and/or mechanical properties of devices through software
(2) designing solid components in AutoCAD (or some equivalent drawing tool) and communicating effectively with professionals towards their timely fabrication
(3) the hands-on preparation of samples and the assembly of devices: sawing, cleaving, cleaning, coating, polishing, soldering, wire-bonding etc.
(4) the configuration and use of optical and low-noise electronic instrumentation: lasers, photodetectors, oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers, mixers, lock-in amplifiers etc
The post holder will report to Dr Mark Oxborrow.
In addition to the research, there is the opportunity for the post holder to develop teaching experience, for example delivering undergraduate or MSc lectures or tutorials or organising an undergraduate lab experiment, supervising MEng research projects and helping with the supervision of PhD students on linked projects.
