Financial Assistant


Overview
Awamaki is a young non-profit based in rural Peru. We use social enterprise strategies to create economic opportunities and improve well-being for women and their families in the region of Ollantaytambo, Cusco, Peru. We organize, train and facilitate access to market for women's fair trade textile and fiber cooperatives. We also promote sustainable tourism through the organization of homestays, Spanish classes with our Spanish teachers' cooperative, and visits to our weaving cooperative for volunteers and tourists.
We are recruiting for a dedicated, experienced individual to support our accounting and financial management systems. This individual will carry out asepcts of bookkeeping, accounting systems improvement, creating financial reports and assisting with financial analysis.

Start Date
We hope to fill this position as soon as possible, but the right person is more important than the timing for us, and we can be flexible about the start date.
Job Responsibilities
  • Supervise or manage the daily book-keeping and accounting responsibilities, using Quickbooks and Excel.
  • Assisting with the creation of overall and program-specific budgets, and producing the necessary reports to ensure that staff stay within budget.
  • Communicate with board of U.S. 501(c)(3) organization, local Peru board, staff and constituents about financial position (or assist with the reporting and analysis necessary to support the Executive Director in these communications.)
  • Occasional on-site financial training and management of staff in Peru.
  • Ability to evaluate current accounting/book-keeping systems and advise/improve/change where necessary.
  • Use accounting software to produce reports and financial statements on a monthly basis or when required.
  • Fill out IRS Form 990.
  • Maintain clear and transparent financial records for all three organizations.
Qualifications
Essential
  • Willingness to commit to the position for one to two years. Longer committment preferred.
  • English fluency and advanced-intermediate spanish. Lower levels of Spanish ability will be considered if applicant is willing to take classes at the beginning of his/her assignment.
  • Excellent communication skills over email and Skype.
  • Independent self-starter who takes the initiative and is able to organize his or her own time and workload.
  • Professional experience using Quickbooks and Excel.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business with Accounting, or similar.
  • 2 years professional experience.
Preferred
  • Familiar with working within the GAAP code.
  • Experience living and working in a developing country.
  • Experience designing accounting and book-keeping systems
  • Knowledge of financial responsibilities of US-registered 501(c) 3 organizations.
  • IT experience
  • Experience making financial management decisions.
