Web Communications Specialist


Do you love Facebook? Live on Twitter? Do you spend your free-time thinking about how social media can be used to engage and connect people and build political power and grow social movements? This is the job for you. The Web Communications Specialist’s role is to bring SEIU-UHW’s vision and the voices of our members into the world of new media, using any and all tools—email, text messaging, video, blogging, social networks, and anything else you can think of—to build a strong labor movement and a healthier California.
Qualifications
  • Proven ability to build relationships and engage with people through online channels such as social media, email, etc.
  • Advanced, broad knowledge and interest in new and emerging media
  • Experience creating and maintaining online content in WordPress or other content management systems
  • Track record of developing effective and creative email and social media campaigns, and comfort using web-based campaign tools like GetActive or Blue State Digital
  • Ability to drive traffic to websites and social media sites and to produce action-oriented results
  • Experience with website building and/or redesign—we don’t need you to be able to do it yourself, but you should be able to facilitate the process
  • Ability to learn quickly, troubleshoot and come up with creative solutions to problems
  • Experience creating and delivering multimedia content
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to write effectively for different audiences and on different platforms (i.e., website, email, Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
  • Excellent design skills and familiarity with Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator
  • Existing knowledge of HTML and CSS is a plus, but must at least be comfortable and willing to learn the basics
  • Team player who’s comfortable in a shared work environment
  • Ability to work well with a team under the pressure of tight deadlines
  • A commitment to social justice
  • Prior union or non-profit campaign experience
Responsibilities
1) Regularly update, maintain and improve SEIU-UHW’s main website and some campaign websites. This includes:
  • Managing SEIU-UHW website content and directing placement on the website
  • Redesigning websites and managing the development of new campaign websites as needed
  • Posting new content on a daily basis to maintain an evolving high profile web presence for our union
  • Writing content for the web as needed
2) Helping to develop a plan to launch a targeted and effective email marketing campaigns. This involves:
  • Developing tools for keeping members informed of new site content and new developments
  • Developing creative strategies to grow our list of member emails
  • Managing data within web-based messaging and advocacy center, including imports, exports, and data structure functions
  • Developing and coordinating online advocacy campaigns with a team
  • Initiating advocacy emails, tracking and analyzing their effectiveness
3) Integrating social networking and new media elements to engage our members online
  • Helping to increase the use of social media, including Facebook and Twitter, to reach targeted audiences of union members and stakeholders
  • Researching and implementing other new media tools to use to engage union members
4) Tracking and monitoring online media. This includes:
  • Providing recommendations based on usage and geared toward increasing online usage
  • Regularly providing web statistics including preparing periodic reports, analyzing data and implementing site changes to improve user experience
  • Monitoring SEIU-UHW and web/online communications trends
5) Other duties as assigned, which may include:
  • Training members to help bridge the digital divide. Trainings may focus on video-storytelling, social media and other writing for the web, including blogging.
  • Working with vendors as needed
Physical Requirements
  • Able to sit at the computer for up to two hours at a time
  • Able to bend, sit, stand and stoop
  • Able to lift up to ten pounds
