The Maurice and Jane Sugar Law Center for Social and Economic Justice (Sugar Law Center) seeks an Executive Director (ED). The Sugar Law Center is a national public interest law center dedicated to advancing the rights of working people and their communities through litigation, public education, and advocacy. In collaboration with the Sugar Law Center Board and in partnership with the Legal Director, the Executive Director is responsible for the development of Sugar Law’s programmatic work, as it relates to and ties in with established priorities. The ED has primary responsibility for staff supervision, budget management, fundraising, development, and for the day-to-day efficient management of Sugar Law. The ED also develops and implements public relations and outreach strategies of the Sugar Law Center.
EXPERIENCE: The Executive Director should have most or all of the following experience and qualifications:
- Demonstrated commitment to the principles of economic and social equity;
- Demonstrated leadership in an advocacy or public policy organization;
- Demonstrated fundraising and development experience and capability;
- Public speaking skills and ability to represent Sugar Law diverse audiences;
- Experience with public relations and the media;
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills;
- Experience working with unions, community, and advocacy groups;
- Experience supervising staff, office budgeting, and administration;
- A law degree and some lawyering experience in the area of workers’ and/or community rights.
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: The successful candidate should:
- Have a commitment to the Sugar Law Center’s mission;
- Be able to analyze and formulate disparate information into a sound, well-organized plan;
- Have strong skills in fundraising, development, and management;
- Be a team builder/player and a strategist;
- Be comfortable receiving input from diverse sources and able to work in partnership with the Legal Director;
- Be resourceful, with the organizational ability to gain the support and confidence of the staff and Board;
- Be result-oriented, adept at planning, prioritizing, and following through.
