Safety & Health Officer


Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) is one of the world's largest producers of zinc as well as a substantial producer of copper, lead, gold and silver. MMG's Century operation, located in North-west Queensland, is Australia's largest open pit zinc mine. In production since 2000, Century comprises an open pit mine and concentrator at Lawn Hill, connected by a pipeline to the Karumba dewatering and shipping facilities. A number of projects are currently underway to extend the life of the Century assets beyond the current completion of large open pit production in 2016.
We're currently looking for a Safety & Health Officer to join the team at Century.  Reporting to the Safety & Health Superintendent, you will support, mentor and coach frontline leaders and workers to facilitate the delivery of OHS objectives and targets set by MMG.
Your primary responsibilities will involve:
Providing frontline workforce with guidance, technical support and assistance on OHS matters
Working with departments to develop a systematic approach to managing safety and injury prevention
Organising daily inspections and meetings
Promoting awareness of MMG's OHS practices
Assisting with the preparation of monthly OHS reports
Ensuring site compliance with OHS legislation and corporate requirements
Reporting and closing out OHS investigations in best possible time
Participate in continuous improvement process

The Successful Applicant
This role requires a person with both well-developed technical skills and personal attributes including the following:
Recognised qualification in a relevant Health and Safety discipline
Previous experience in a OHS role within a mining or heavy industry
Highly developed written, presentation and verbal communication skills
Excellent problem solving and computer skills
Ability to work effectively within a team
Understanding of emergency response and contractor management
Strong commitment to Safety & Environment
First Aid & Workplace training / assessment qualifications
For this position, MMG Century Mine is offering a 8/6 FIFO roster from Townsville, Cairns or Mt. Isa, with airline salary sacrifice options for employees choosing to reside elsewhere in Queensland. Remuneration includes competitive base salary, site allowance and annual bonus incentive scheme.
