The appointment will be on UCL Grade 6. The salary range will be £28,057 - £29,585 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
Duties and Responsibilities The Human Ecology Research Group based in UCL Anthropology is prominent in research on social and environmental sustainability, especially as concerns changing land use, livelihoods and biodiversity in developing countries. Together with Dr Marcus Rowcliffe (Institute of Zoology) and Dr Aidan Keane (Imperial) as well as in-country partners (Dr Mohammed Said, International Livestock research Institute) we hold a NERC-funded ESPA grant on Biodiversity, Ecosystem services, Social sustainability and Tipping points in East African drylands http://www.ucl.ac.uk/best/ This research seeks to understand the interplay between changing policies and people's choices of more or less environmentally and socially sustainable forms of land use in Kenya and Tanzania pastoralist areas which represent hotspots of poverty and savanna biodiversity.
The position being advertised is for a Research Assistant to carry out fieldwork in East Africa, involving economic games exploring decision-making among pastoralist landowners considering conservancy set-aside. The post is available from November/December 2012 until 31 March 2013.
Key Requirements The successful applicant will be educated to at least Bachelors degree level, and ideally to Masters level, in an area relating to social and environmental sustainability. Experience of academic research and an ability to work independently is essential. Experience with overseas fieldwork and analysing quantitative data is desirable.
