The mission of the West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use
(WASCAL) is to improve the management of land resources for food, livelihoods and the environment in the face of climate change. Established by its member countries – Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d‘Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo with the help of Germany, WASCAL conducts a regional research and capacity-building program to improve land resources through better technologies, policies, institutions, and management. It is headquartered in Accra but maintains a research Center in Ouagadougou to undertake, encourage and promote research at the regional and national levels. It also supports national data collection efforts and Graduate Schools at 10 universities across the region (www.wascal.org).
Position Objective: Under the direction of the WASCAL Executive Director and as part of the WASCAL management team, the incumbent will be responsible for:
• Planning and implementing the administrative operations of the Center in the areas of financial planning/budgeting, accounting and control; personnel; procurement and inventory management; staff travel; premises and staff accommodation; security; and communications in accordance with Board approved Staff and Financial Regulations of WASCAL.
• Liaising with the host Governments, Donors and Partner Institutions pertaining to the implementation of signed agreements
• Controlling and approving financial payments and obligations
• Supervising support staff of the Center
• Performing other tasks as required by the Director
Selection criteria: Post graduate qualification (Master degree) in a business discipline with a financial and accounting emphasis required. Certification from internationally recognized accounting body preferred. Minimum of seven years’ experience in financial and administrative management in the private sector, NGO or international organization. Ability to maintain harmonious working relationship with individuals of different national and cultural backgrounds. Skilled in the use of standard business software. Excellent command of English and French. Willingness to travel in the region.
Remuneration: Internationally attractive salary and benefit package.
Duration: Two-year fixed term (renewable upon satisfactory performance)
