INTERN JOB TITLE: Student Engineer

NAME OF HIRING DEPARTMENT: Civil/Structural Engineering

DESCRIPTION OF DEPARTMENT

The FLSmidth Mineral Processing Civil/Structural Department provides engineering services to support the sales and operations of FLSmidth equipment mineral processing equipment. These services encompass the structural design of mineral processing building structures, primary and secondary crushing facilities, mine surface facilities, including warehouses, truck service facilities, administration buildings, and other ancillary structures. Design includes structural steel, reinforced concrete and masonry. To a lesser extent engineering of the earthworks (including drainage and grading, roads, underground piping, excavations and fills) associated with mineral processing facilities is performed by the Civil/Structural Department. Analysis and design of dynamic equipment foundations is also performed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Basic engineering design of steel and concrete structures and foundations, commensurate with schooling and experience, subject to project needs and budgets

• Assisting in earthwork calculations (hydrology studies, design of drainage structures, etc.)

• Design of retaining structures

• Preparing structural steel and reinforced concrete material take-offs for estimating purposes

• Review of structural steel and concrete reinforcing steel shop drawings

• Review of Company standard specifications for updating (current code verification, review of product callouts and descriptions, etc.)

• Exposure to FLSmidth products and procedures

• Other related duties as assigned by the Department manager

Competencies/Qualifications

Required:

The engineering candidate shall have completed the following University coursework:

• Statics and Dynamics
• Strength of Materials
• Structural Steel Design Course
• Reinforced Concrete Design Course

Desired:

• Successfully passed ( or scheduled to take) the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam
• Proficient in communication skills, including writing
• Familiarity with AutoCAD
• Exposure to structural analysis software (i.e., RISA 3D, STAAD, SAP, RAM, etc.) (proficiency not required)
• Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Word
• University coursework (in order of importance):
- Geotechnical (Soils) Engineering
- Technical Writing
- Hydrology
- Fluid Mechanics

HOURS PER WEEK:30 to 40 hours per week

START DATE: June 2013

END DATE: August 2013

COMPENSATION: $17.00/HR
