Greenpeace Executive Director - Czech Republic


Greenpeace stands for positive change through action. It defends the natural world and promotes peace. It investigates, exposes and confronts environmental abuse by governments and corporations around the world and engages with the general public to make this abuse seen and heard and create change. It champions responsible and socially just solutions, including scientific and technical innovation. Its goal is to ensure the ability of the earth to nurture life in all its diversity.
GP Czech Republic has tasked Mission Talent to provide a search for the new Executive Director, who will have an unshakeable commitment to Greenpeace’s core values. The new Executive Director will lead Greenpeace Czech Republic at the forefront of environmentalism to enhance its position as an active catalyst for positive responses to global environmental threats.
The candidate will:
  • Provide effective leadership, vision and strategic direction to the Greenpeace Czech Republic office in co-operation with Greenpeace International, other Greenpeace regional and country offices and in accordance with Greenpeace’s core values and mission with regard to campaigns, marketing, communications, mobilisation of the public, finance and administration.
  • Ensure that Greenpeace plays a key role in the development of national and international effective environmental campaigns and that it makes best possible contributions to Greenpeace global objectives and global presence.
  • Work with the Board to ensure proper governance and accountability.
  • Guarantee the general strategy of the fundraising to ensure that Greenpeace’s self sufficiency on national and international level is strengthened and growing.
  • Maintain the organisation’s position as a key player in the debate about environment in the Czech Republic.
Overall purpose of job:
  • To provide effective leadership, vision and strategic direction to the organisation in co-operation with Greenpeace International and in accordance with Greenpeace’s core values and purpose.
  • To ensure that Greenpeace plays a key role in the development of national and international effective environmental campaigns and that it makes best possible contributions to Greenpeace International’s work.
  • To be responsible to the GP Czech Republic Board for the management and administration of GP Czech Republic and work with the Board to ensure proper governance and accountability.
  • To guarantee the general strategy of the fundraising – to ensure that the results will guarantee the strengthening of the financial self sufficiency of the GP office in the Czech Republic and is able to contribute to GP International in accordance with the Licence Agreement.
Main areas of responsibility
  1. Leadership
    • Provide direction and leadership for the development and management of the organisation’s overall strategy, policy, resource management, operations and communications with regard to campaigns, marketing, communications, finance and administration
    • Oversee and facilitate the development of the organisation’s culture and its capacity to learn and grow from the environment in which it operates and from its own experiences.
    • To maintain the organization’s position as a key player in the debate about environment in the Czech Republic.
  2. Strategic development
    • Ensure that effective environment campaings are linked up with succesful marketing, fundraising, and communications strategies.
    • Closely monitor and give final approval to the initiatives in the relation to the licensing program of Greenpeace’s name and mark.
    • Develop the organisation’s strategies, goals and policies in consultation with the Board, senior managers and staff.
    • To optimise the strategic relationship with other Greenpeace organizations.
    • Analyse, interpret and contribute to the strategic objectives of Greenpeace Czech Republic.
  3. Board
    • Maintain an effective relationship with the Board including the delivery of timely reports, attendance at the Board meetings, and liaison with the Chair of the Board on a regular basis.
    • Take overall responsibility for the preparation of all proposals for approval by the Board.
    • Ensure that the Board is aware of all matters requiring the Board decisions, or which might involve the Board or individual Board members in legal actions.
    • To assist the Board chair in ensuring the maintenance of the effective functioning of the Board.
    • Inform the Board about all developments of major significance to the organisation and provide the Board with the secretarial backup necessary for its effective work.
    • Ensure the implementation of the Board decisions.
  4. Operations
    • Be responsible for the final approval of all direct actions.
    • Exert overall control of all aspects of the operation of the organisation including the implementation and evaluation of its overall strategies and polices, its campaign, financial, marketing, fundraising, communications and administrative programmes.
    • Ensure that proper financial controls and practices are adhered to at all times.
    • To guarantee the financial and administrative integrity of Greenpeace Czech Republic.
    • To oversee the elaboration of annual budgets and plans, as well as of the organization´s financial forecasts.
    • Participate in the International Executive Directors’ meetings and other Greenpeace for as appropriate.
    • Effectively represent the organisation externally.
  5. Communication and fundraising
    • To represent the organisation externally. Oversee the development of the organisation’s public profile, working closely with the Programme Director to foster appropriate and productive relations with, for instance, other non-governmental organisations, media organisations, and government, statutory and private bodies.
    • To ensure appropriate and productive relationship with the Greenpeace supporters and other appropriate organisations.
    • Foster good communications within the organisation, ensuring quality information flow between the departments, in both directions within the management hierarchy and the organisation. To ensure the inclusion of fundraising strategies into campaigns and communications areas.
  6. Management
General
  • Ensure effective and appropriate management practices throughout the organisation. Communicate the organisation’s strategies and activities effectively within the office.
  • Communicate clear expectations, of the highest possible standards of work, to all staff. Participate in the recruitment process for all senior staff and approve their appointment.
  • Oversee the recruitment, induction, training and development of all staff. Approve the dismissal of any staff member.
With respect to line managed staff
  • Supervise and be directly accountable for their work.
  • Delegate tasks and projects appropriately so that there are clear expectations of the highest possible standards.
  • Measure and evaluate the results of delegated work in relation to clear objectives.
  • Chair regular SMT meetings, provide support and feedback to the SMT members and ensure that they arrange regular meetings with the staff they manage.
  • Take responsibility for effective and proper communication between them and ensure that decisions taken by members of the SMT and information from their departments reach staff expediently.
  • Meet regularly with all line managed staff; undertake their annual appraisal and identify training needs and opportunities.
  • Ensure that those who line manage others in or out off the staff take proper accountability and management for these people and delegate appropriately and expect high standards of result-oriented work.
