Online Communications Manager - WITNESS , United States of America


WITNESS, Inc. seeks a creative, focused and flexible Fulltime Temporary Online Communications Manager for three and a half month position starting in late January 2013. Reporting to the Senior Communication Manager, the Temporary Online Communications Manager will be a member of a dynamic four-person Communication department that will work collaboratively with our WITNESS team, blog contributors and externally with human rights and social justice experts, technology and media sector influencers and those producing or engaging in human rights online video content and spaces. A successful candidate will be informed of current online social networking and outreach trends for human rights networks and audiences.
The primary responsibility for the Temporary Online Communications is ensuring that all of the organization’s digital profiles carry timely and relevant content in support of WITNESS’ key programmatic initiatives and institutional goals, through coordination with relevant staff and contributors.
SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE:
Strategize and Implement Communication Branding and Messaging
• Ensure synergy of branding and messaging across web-based platforms to support WITNESS’ communication goals;
• Develop and implement marketing plans, together with Online Outreach and Production Coordinator, to increase visibility of the WITNESS website and grow traffic.
Blog and Website Content Management
• Serve as blog editor which includes sourcing submissions (internal and external to the organization), editing content, curating, and publishing the blog;
• Develop, write, edit and manage text and multi-media content for the website and e-communications;
• Oversee gathering and review of blog and web analytics to improve content engagement.
Community Engagement and Outreach
• Oversee strategic distribution and circulation of blog content, through maintaining editorial partnerships and collaborating with staff and guest authors on outreach;
• Conduct online media outreach (specifically to blogger journalists) for themes and projects of the Leadership Initiative including, for example: visual anonymity, safety and security in human rights video online, and the Human Rights Channel on YouTube;
• Strategize on the development of content streams to engage and strengthen the video-for-change community, together with the Video Advocacy Training Manager and Program Director;
PRINCIPAL RELATIONSHIPS
• Reports to the Senior Communications Manager;
• Works closely with Managing Director, Program and External Relations teams, and all blog contributors;
• Externally with human rights and social justice experts, technology and media sector influencers, and the video–for-change community, specifically those producing or engaging in human rights online video content and spaces.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
• Education: A bachelor’s degree or related professional experience
• Work Experience: A minimum of 5-7 years of Communications or relevant experience, preferably working in human rights, social justice, progressive media environments, and journalism; advocacy blogging experience required.
• Communications: Strong communication (written and verbal), editorial judgment and ability, interpersonal, and networking skills, with an ability to communicate externally to a variety of stakeholders, groups, and audiences, and internally with all levels of staff; exceptional attention to detail.
• Online Content and Software: Familiarity with Dreamweaver, Photoshop, or other image editing software; familiarity with CMS and open source platforms such as Drupal; knowledge of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS); experience using Google Analytics and AdWords, and evaluating and reporting on the popularity and effectiveness of website content and ad campaigns; a good sense for and comfort level with technology and online community social norms and behaviors.
• Systems: Familiarity with Democracy in Action or similar email, advocacy, and online fundraising systems; strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Project Management: Superior research, organization, project management, planning and forecasting, and media curation skills.
• Media and Human Rights Advocacy: Strong understanding of human rights advocacy landscape, online video and social media
• Work Habits: Effective team player; ability to manage multiple projects and tasks under tight deadlines.
PREFERRED SKILLS:
• Language Skills: Proficiency in Spanish, French, or additional languages a plus.
COMPENSATION: Commensurate with experience
