Innovation Trial Manager – India
Madhya Pradesh/Orissa, India and Rural Kenya

Organization Description

Most of the world's poor are farmers, representing the largest and most uniform group of poor people in the world. One Acre Fund is a start-up NGO in Kenya, Rwanda, and Burundi that is innovating a new way of helping farm families to achieve their full potential. Instead of giving handouts, One Acre invests in farmers to generate a permanent gain in farm income. We provide farmers with a "market bundle" that includes education, finance, seed and fertilizer, and market access. Our program is proven impactful – every year, we weigh thousands of harvests and measure more than 100% average gain in farm income per acre. We have laser-like focus on generating better lives for the people that we serve.
We are growing quickly. In six years, we have grown to serve 130,000 farm families with more than 1000 full–time field staff. In three more years, we will at least quadruple in size, while adding several new countries. Our approach has won widespread validation, winning grants from the highly competitive Echoing Green and Skoll Foundations, and the global Financial Times/IFC award for "basic needs financing" in 2010 and 2011.  Website: www.oneacrefund.org

Job Description

One Acre Fund is interested to learn more about the India market – in particular, some of the poorer states. We are investigating partnership with a well–respected and innovative organization that sells smallholder–appropriate irrigation equipment, and wish to conduct some joint trials together.
Likely joint trials include:
  • Run a small trial making loans to equipment dealers, so that they can stock and sell more irrigation equipment to farmers.
  • Run a small trial offering equipment finance directly to farmers, to spur additional demand for equipment.
  • Run a small trial offering seed and fertilizer finance directly to farmers, to spur additional demand for these other farm inputs.
Key success criteria would include (a) level of customer demand and sales, (b) 99%+ repayment recovery, and (c) demonstrated social impact on farmers. If successful, one or more of these trials could be scaled much more broadly. Our ideal vision would be to reach millions of farm families.
These would begin as small–scale trials with 0 to 3 staff under management. However, if successful, the trials would expand rapidly.

Qualifications

We are seeking exceptional professionals with 2 to 5+ years work experience, and a demonstrated long–term career interest in international development. They will serve in a career–track position that combines both field and management experience in India. As a young organization, we are ready to hand over large responsibility for specific, well–defined work modules, with similar structure to an operations consulting role.
We are looking for someone truly extraordinary for the trial manager role. Only 3% of applicants make it to a phone screen. Therefore, please only respond if you fit these criteria:
  • Strong work experiences. Examples include a high–level professional work experience, or some kind of successful entrepreneurial experience (e.g. starting a field program in a developing country, leading a conference, starting a business, solid peace corps accomplishments)
  • Leadership experience at work, or outside of work
  • Top–performing undergraduate background (include marks and test scores on your resume)
  • No ego or drama. We are all stable people who are fun to be around. We are looking for others that combine strong leadership skills with a humble approach to service
  • A willingness to commit to living in rural areas for at least two years – this is a long–term, career–track role and will include a training period in Kenya of approximately 6 months.
  • English and Hindi bilingual required
  • Extraordinary patience
Preferred Start Date: Flexible
Compensation: Commensurate with experience.
Benefits: All living expenses: health cover, immunizations, flight, room and board.
