CONSULTANT POSTING/ANNOUNCEMENT

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIST

FOR THE UNITED METHODIST COMMITTEE ON RELIEF (UMCOR) UNIT OF
THE GENERAL BOARD OF GLOBAL MINISTRIES OF THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

Length and location of Assignment: 3 month assignment.  Headquarters are based in New York City; however, the consultant could work remotely.

Reports to:  Don Temples, Director of Fund Development

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The General Board of Global Ministries is the global mission agency of The United Methodist Church.  It has personnel, projects, and partners in 136 countries and incorporates the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is the not-for-profit global humanitarian aid agency of the United Methodist Church. UMCOR is working in more than 80 countries worldwide.
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is seeking a consultant for a three month period who will develop a business development strategy for UMCOR.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
•    Review UMCOR global health and international programs’ current business development focus/strategy
•    Identify core agency strengths and focus
•    Review current UMCOR process for securing, applying, fulfilling, tracking business development activity
•    Review applications over the past three years to determine a success\fail rate.  Summarize strengths and weaknesses of the applications in general.
•    Determine with the finance department a realistic annual fundraising target from public\private donors.
•    Conduct research and Interview UMCOR program and field/mission heads, partner organizations and donors to review processes for identifying and pursing business development opportunities
•    Provide recommendations (based on best practices and agency review) to :
o    Determine business development strategy based on core strengths and focus
o    Identify potential (new) donors and funding opportunities based on determined strategy
o    Identify improvements (processes, protocols, systems) to make agency process more effective and efficient
o    Staffing recommendations for positions in the Business Development Unit
o    An analysis of where the Business Development Unit should be placed within UMCOR

DELIVERABLES:
•    A powerpoint presentation to staff and senior managers to discuss findings
•    A short monthly report to the supervisor that covers activities during that month.
•    A final written report that details findings and recommendations.  The final report should include a recommend road map for the next 24 months for the startup of a Business Development Unit, including budget implications

EXPERIENCE and QUALIFICATIONS:
•    Proven track record in leading business development in different humanitarian aid and development sectors, including but not limited to Water/Sanitation/Hygiene, Health,  Shelter and Reconstruction, Livelihoods, and Education highly desirable.
•    Proven experience in delivering short term technical consultations to NGO organizations.
•    Experience working with a faith-based organization or familiarity with the United Methodist Church a plus.
