PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
The proposed Diploma, Bachelor or Master Thesis / Internship is mentored by the department SAP Next Business and Technology: the global technology research and innovation unit of SAP.
SAP customers use the Transportation Management solution to optimize the routes of vehicles and the flow of transported goods such that costs (e.g. fleet cost, penalty cost) are minimized subject to a set of constraints (e.g. time or capacity constraints). When delivering goods, unexpected events may render the calculated routes and schedules obsolete: We need to cope with events that may arise rather occasionally (like changed traffic situations, or new customer orders). Other events (like arriving at a location or unloaded freight) inform about the delivery progress which may deviate from the initial plan. SAP Next Business and Technology examines the use of the principles of Dynamic Optimization to efficiently react to incoming events and to feed back heuristic decisions in (close to) real-time.
EXPECTATIONS AND TASKS
A range of possible thesis topics are associated with the objectives of Dynamic Transportation Management described above: Parallelization approaches to dynamic vehicle routing, elastic scaling to improve responsiveness, approaches to event prediction/anticipation, etc. The eventual tasks shall be mutually defined by the student, the supervising professor and SAP.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
* Student (f/m) at a university or university of applied sciences
* Preferred fields of studies: Computer Science, Mathematics, Business Informatics, Information Management or similar studies
* Experience with C++
* Good English language skills
* Good analytical skills, pro-active team worker
* Experience in optimization algorithms and designing efficient algorithms
