Walk for Immigrant New York Event Organizer


Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York works from neighborhood-based community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; and Brentwood, Long Island. With a membership of 12,000+ low-income and immigrant New Yorkers, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our community and city: workplace justice, tenants' rights, immigrant civil rights, language-access, LGBTQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform.
CURRENT OPENING:
Make the Road New York seeks a grassroots event organizer to coordinate our annual Walk for Immigrant New York, working closely with MRNY's development and organizing staff. The event is designed to expand the political and fundraising strength of low-income immigrants in NYC and to celebrate the contributions of immigrant workers, students and families.
The position is full-time through mid-October, with the possibility of continuing beyond, funding permitting. MRNY is a large, multi-faceted organization, and this position requires flexibility, a positive attitude, and an ability to deal with many tasks and prioritize.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Identify and solicit support from corporate sponsors
  • Reach out to other organizations to broaden involvement and increase participant numbers
  • Work with organizing staff and department directors to build member and staff ownership and excitement
  • Coordinate logistics, including police permitting, event volunteers, equipment, and food
  • Work with development director to plan the event program and prepare speakers
  • Work with communications staff to craft the message, develop bilingual materials and build event visibility using a variety of old school and new media strategies
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to represent the organization to funders, allies and members
  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task, plan, prioritize and complete assignments under strict deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal and (ideally, bilingual) oral and written communication skills
  • Relevant organizing, volunteer recruitment and/or fundraising experience required
  • Bilingual communications skills strongly preferred
  • Commitment to social justice, with a desire to grow within the development department
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and databases

Salary based on experience within Make the Road New York's compensation scale, generous benefits
