Manager, Forest Stewardship & Sustainability - International Paper

Position Overview:

This is a senior sustainability position reporting to the Manager,
Corporate Sustainability. The primary focus will be on forest
stewardship across the value chain of a global paper and packaging
company. Knowledge and experience with global forestry issues,
including fiber supply and certification, are necessary.

In addition, a broad understanding of sustainability concepts and principles as they apply to large-scale manufacturing is desired. The successful candidate will work across the corporation with other business and functional leaders to drive sustainable forestry, fiber certification, and broader sustainability initiatives. Extensive interaction with external stakeholder groups will also be required.

Responsibilities:

Serve as the subject matter expert on forestry and fiber certification for issues related to sustainability goals and objectives.
Manage relationships with key stakeholders on issues related to sustainability and forest stewardship and provide support to key customers on behalf of business leaders.
Provide input to procurement policy development and technical improvements to the certification system.
Collaborate with the fiber procurement teams to ensure certified fiber goals and objectives are met.
Develop and maintain expertise in applicable certification policies and protocols regarding forest management and chain of custody systems.
Provide internal and external training on issues related to forest stewardship and fiber certification.
Contribute to progress on IP's sustainability strategy, guiding principles and goals.
Develop and maintain relationships with ENGOs.
Work with various IP Business units, Communications, Government Relations and Investor Relations to address inquiries from diverse groups of stakeholders.

Qualifications:

Master's Degree in Forest Products, Forestry, Natural Resource Management or related field requires; advanced degree preferred.
Minimum of 7 to 10 years experience in forestry or a related field.
Knowledge of forestry certification programs (SFI, FSC, PEFC preferred).
Knowledge of the forest products industry in the US desirable, global knowledge preferred.
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and work with diverse stakeholders (e.g., corporate leadership, local/state political leaders).
General knowledge and experience with key sustainability concepts: life cycle assessment, design for the environment, full cost accounting, cradle-to-cradle planning, etc.
Demonstrated ability to work across complex organizations.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage large-scale projects from vision to implementation.
Demonstrated ability to lead change.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
Strong customer service skills.
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Outlook).
The position will be based in Memphis, TN and minimal travel (20%) will be required.
