Sustainability Assistant - Portland Community College


Portland Community College is the largest institution of higher learning in the state, serving more than 1,373,758 college-age residents in a five-county, 1,500-square-mile area in NW Oregon. The PCC bond program will help to provide educational opportunities throughout the PCC district.

We grow produce for the cafeteria on site in our Rock Creek Learning Garden. We harvest our produce and take it to the Rock Creek Cafeteria. There the cafeteria staff incorporate the produce into daily meals. The staff harvests their pre-consumer waste, it is then it is taken to our worm bin onsite. There we compost our pre-consumer waste, harvest our compost and return it to our garden. That's the loop.

We are looking for an energetic professional to be a part of our sustainability team that has skills or passion for dirt, data, machines, public interaction and sustainability.

Responsibilities:

You will be involved in growing organic produce for our campus café. You will assist in the operation of PCC Rock Creek's large learning garden that includes 51 raised beds, fruit trees, blueberries, a solar-powered irrigation system, cob house tool shed with rain barrel, earthen oven with green roof and surrounding acreage. You will also oversee a composting system that processes pre and post-consumer organic matter in an automated "Rocket Composter" and a large worm bin.

The position also entails tracking and recording data from such activities as food produced, organic material collected, service learning hours supervised and oversight and budgeting of projects in the garden and on campus. Are you a person who loves to garden but is also handy with Excel?

The Sustainability Assistant will:

Propagate, plant, weed, nurture and harvest crops in the Learning Garden for the Rock Creek Food Service.
Maintain and teach proper care and use of garden tools and equipment.
Assist with growing food in raised beds of other student and staff groups on campus.
Oversee and help maintain irrigation system.
Assist with maintenance, construction and possibly operating small machinery for garden use.
Maintain cafeteria food waste diversion program by collecting and weighing food scraps and put in vermicomposting bin or rocket composter.
Learn to use and operate PCC's Rocket Composter and collect data on food waste.
Help supervise service learning students in Learning Garden, composting and sustainability-related projects.
Maintain and improve campus recycling and solid waste education and outreach.
Assist with ASPCC student sustainability projects such as Earth week and Harvest Festival.
Assist with data collection, tracking and input for various sustainability-related projects on campus.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Previous experience working with organic gardening or farming (CSA).
Ability to dig, bed, kneel and lift heavy objects up to 50lbs.
Experience overseeing a composting system, particularly vermicomposting.
Basic understanding of solid waste and recycling.
Ability to work with others in a group setting, including committee participation.
Ability to input data utilizing Microsoft Office Suite.
Experience with higher education sustainability preferred.
Self- motivated and self-directed.
Demonstrated ability to think critically and problem solve as issues arise.
Must be able to coordinate diverse groups of people.
Compensation: This is a temporary, part time position (15-20 hours/week) with no benefits. The position reports to the Interim Sustainable Practices Coordinator at PCC Rock Creek. Hourly pay range is $11-15. Job will begin in April and will be subject to annual renewal prior to June 30, 2013.
