ROLE OUTLINE:
The position of Senior Consultant/Hydrogeologist is within WYG’s expanding Geo-Environment Capability and will be based in the Cardiff office in South Wales.  
Geo-environmental consultancy is at the core of our business and we are seeking to strengthen ourContaminated Land team in Cardiff with an experienced environmental consultant with experience in site investigation (management and techniques), interpretive risk assessment (human health and controlled waters), remediation and multi-disciplinary project management. 
The right candidate will be self-motivated, resourceful and solution focused and with an ability to critically appraise complex data sets from first principles.  They will be fully cognisant of recent developments in UK guidance and policy with respect to the investigation and assessment of contaminated land, and will be able and willing to manage site investigation projects as and when the need arises.  The key skills/experience required and main duties and responsibilities required to fulfil this role are summarised as follows:
  • Desk study assessments (Phase 1)
  • Design and management of intrusive site investigations (Phase 2) and preparation of factual reports (a working knowledge of HoleBASE/AGS (or similar) would be an advantage)
  • Collection of field data (working knowledge of gas monitoring and VOC monitoring equipment would be an advantage, as would experience of in situ data loggers (diver/baro) for groundwater monitoring purposes)
  • Interpretive assessment (Phase 3) including:
  • Qualitative Risk Assessment (CIRIA 552)
  • Tier 1 – Generic Quantitative Risk Assessment / Screening
  • Tier 2 – Statistical Analysis (CIEH – Stats guidance)
  • Tier 3 – Detailed Quantitative Risk Assessment (Human Health and Wider Environment Assessments using various proprietary software)
  • An understanding of contaminant fate and transport (i.e. principles of hydro-geology)
  • Land Gas Assessment (CIRIA 665/BS8485)
  • Understanding of asbestos risk assessment
  • Understanding of the CL:AIRE Code of Practice (Waste)
  • Remediation options appraisals (SuRF UK)
  • Remediation design, supervision, management and validation
  • Liaison with clients and regulators
  • Project management (commercial and technical)
The role will also require interface with a broad range of clients, regulators and contractors as well as colleagues in the wider WYG group.
An ability and willingness to meet the mandatory competencies of the Environment Agency’s ‘White List’ of approved site supervisors would be an advantage (i.e. 5 years relevant experience and IOSH qualification – training to gain IOSH will be provided if required).
The Senior Consultant/ Hydrogeologist must have a relevant degree, and ideally also a postgraduate degree, in an environment-related subject.  Prior experience of work within the Geo-Environmental Industry is essential and the ideal candidate will have some of the following qualifications/accreditations (training will be provided if required):
  • Emergency First Aid at Work
  • CSCS Card
  • IOSH / CITB Construction Skills (Highly desirable)
  • CAT and Genny Trained
  • Risk assessment software packages (CLEA UK/ R&D P20(RTM) / ModFlow etc)
An excellent working knowledge of Health and Safety procedures with respect to site management is essential.
