Third Engineer Officer

Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities
• To work to the requirements of, and reporting to, the Second Engineer Officer, undertaking the following tasks and any other that the Chief Engineer Officer, Master or Marine Engineering Manager requires for the safety and / or efficient operation of the vessel.
• Develop a thorough operating knowledge of the vessel’s systems, these include but are not limited to:
- Main power generation plant, prime movers and their auxiliary systems, such as cooling, fuel oil, charge air, lubrication oil systems etc. and to gain intimate knowledge of their pipe runs, tank and valve locations.
- Machinery monitoring, alarms, power management systems
- Electrical generation and distribution systems, including emergency power supply and first start arrangements.
- Fire fighting systems and emergency procedures, in particular the emergency shutdown procedures, and to actively participate in relevant drills as directed.
- Ship’s fitted scientific systems, deck equipment and associated hydraulic equipment.
- Black and grey water systems.
- Potable water generation / treatment / storage / distribution systems.
- HVAC and refrigeration installations.
• Carry out routine and emergent maintenance as directed, ensuring that the appropriate documentation regarding maintenance of equipment is completed.
• Maintain lifeboat and outboard motors.
• To assist with the maintenance and upkeep of the fixed scientific equipment on board the vessel as directed by the Chief and/or Second Engineer Officers.
• To share in the duties of watch keeping duty roster and manning rota at sea and in port as instructed.

• To ensure that the appropriate Pre-Cruise sailing checklist is satisfactorily completed and the Chief Engineer Officer is advised accordingly.
• During refit, re-certification and self maintenance periods to work to the requirements of the Second Engineer Officer, to ensure that the needs of all on board technical requirements are fulfilled.
• To become familiar with the duties of the other Engineer Officers and Electro Technical Officer and to develop oneself for promotion to Second Engineer.

Training:
• All staff shall attend appropriate training, which maybe onboard ship or ashore, to revalidate certificates relating to STCW95 and personal development programmes.  The post holder is expected to participate in NMF Sea Systems internal training programmes both at sea and ashore.
• All staff must maintain an oversight of training needs in support of their position and personal development.
Medical/Fitness:
All staff are required to hold an STCW95 approved Medical Certificate (ENG 1) and will be required to maintain a good standard of personal fitness.
Shore Duties and Responsibilities:
• When ashore and not on leave, staff may be required to work for periods at NOC to assist in planning and co-ordinating of future research cruises together with principle scientists and the operations staff, or to assist in supporting the overall activities taking place at that time.
• To work by ships in the situation of being laid up, under repair or in refit whilst not on leave.
