Campaigner – Ancient Woodland
Reporting to: Head of Campaigning
Based: Grantham Head Office, Lincolnshire or Home based but must work a minimum of 2 days per week in Head Office
Campaigning is the window to the Woodland Trust’s Public Affairs work, uniting supporters and enabling them to make a real difference for woods and trees.
This role will use people power and the current planning system to ensure no further loss of ancient woodland while encouraging the planting of new trees to protect the old.
As an experienced environmental campaigner you will identify threats to UK ancient woodland as they arise and lead on campaign development, planning and co-ordination of delivery, including public inquiry work and final evaluation. In addition you will be able to apply knowledge to analysis and research of lengthy, detailed documents, be competent at uniting teams from across an organisation to deliver campaigns/planning cases and be skilled at directing and inspiring volunteers and the public alike to deliver on behalf of the Trust.
You will also support the UK-wide volunteer network ‘WoodWatch’ including quality control, training and ongoing development, enabling them to respond to localised woodland threats. Developing high-level partnerships to support our case work and wider ambitions for ancient woodland, integrate and support community groups as part of ancient woodland campaigns/cases and represent the Trust on panels and as part of coalitions relevant to ancient woodland.
You will have an understanding of and practical knowledge of all four UK countries current town planning laws – including public inquiry processes together with practical experience of campaigning with a proven track record of success. Ideally you will have knowledge of environmental sector ideally with a particular focus on ancient woodland. This role will require regular travel throughout the UK, sometimes at short notice which include overnight stays. The use of our hire car scheme is available.
