  • Department: GE07 - Department of Biochemistry
  • Contract: onbepaald
  • Degree: PhD on PPIs in aggresomes
  • Occupancy rate: 100%
  • Vacancy Type: wp

Job description

The applicant is expected to have a strong background in biochemistry/biotechnology. Interest in bio-informatics is highly welcomed.
  • We are seeking a candidate with a broad biological interest, yet able to identify and to focus on research objectives, to meet agreed deadlines, and who is flexible and willing to assist to other ongoing research.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English are mandatory.

Profile

Position:
A PhD position is available for a highly motivated scientist to join a new and highly innovative research line on the effect of aggregation mutations on the protein-protein interaction profile of key (cancer) genes. The candidate will use in-house developed technologies (PPI-iMIXPro and VIROTRAP), and will introduce and apply other recently developed technologies (BioID and SEC-PCP-SILAC) to study the interactomes of proteins carrying aggregating mutations. The project will be in close collaboration with Joost Schymkowitz and Frederic Rousseau from the VIB Switch lab in Leuven (Xu et al., Nature Chemical Biology, 7, 285-95, 2011). Understanding the assembly of these aggresomes will aid in understanding the cellular response to this pathological event. Start of the project will be at early 2013.
Environment:
The research will be performed in the lab of Kris Gevaert, which is well known for high-end proteomics research using the latest MS instruments, and has outstanding expertise in protein chemistry. The laboratory is situated in the scenic Rommelaere Institute in the heart of Ghent, embedded both at the University Ghent and VIB. As a department we are aiming to maintain our leading position in protein-protein interaction research, and this PhD project clearly contributes to this goal.
