The Organisation
The River Thames Boat Project is a thriving local charity that aims to give people from London and the South East opportunities of experiencing river and waterways environments to the benefit of their personal, social and educational development. We do this by running a variety of programmes for community groups and schools on our specially adapted, fully accessible community barge, the Thames Venturer.
One of these is School on the River, our successful Key Stage 2 environmental education programme that takes place at Teddington Lock, where the non-tidal Thames ends and the tidal estuary begins. It provides classes of 30 primary school children with a day of hands-on cross curricular activities on the boat, at the Lock and on the foreshore, giving them a greater understanding of the geography and ecology of the River Thames and London’s environment.
Our plans for a new education programme form an integral part of our 10 year Strategic Plan for the charity the aims of which include, amongst other things, to provide environmental education for children and young people of all ages from Key Stage 2 upwards and extend use of the boat into the early spring and late autumn.
