The Zoological Society of London is seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic, experienced zoo and wildlife veterinary surgeon (MRCVS) to join the Veterinary Department as one of its Veterinary Officers, on a 2-year Fixed Term Contract, responsible for the health and welfare of all animals in ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. The position will be based primarily at Whipsnade.
As one of ZSL’s Veterinary Officers you will work between both sites in order to meet the needs of the Veterinary Department. Teaching of students, in particular of the veterinary graduates on the MSc in Wild Animal Health, will form a substantial part of your workload. In addition you will participate in the care and preventative medicine programmes, research and conservation activities, including support for ZSL’s conservation programme and native species reintroductions.
It is essential that you have a proven track record in zoological and wildlife medicine, with excellent communication and organisation skills, and a good publication, presentation and research project history is desirable. A post-graduate qualification in this field would be beneficial. Working knowledge of the statutory Health & Safety and animal health regulations is essential, with some management experience desirable. You must be a committed team player. Weekend and on-call duties for both collections are shared.
A strong interest in the veterinary management of the larger mammal species, being a committed proponent of animal welfare and having an enthusiasm for continuing professional development are also essential. A desire to work towards further qualification (e.g. RCVS or European College of Zoological Medicine diplomas) is anticipated.
