Conservation Scientist - Tropical Agriculture and Biodiversity

Reference number: 1100513
Location: Bedfordshire
The post holder will support the Society's international scientific expertise through undertaking a range of research projects to investigate the impact of agricultural management, particularly cocoa restoration, on the density and distribution of birds and mammals and on carbon storage around Gola Rainforest National Park, Sierra Leone. Their work will enable assessment of cocoa as a sustainable and viable crop to support local livelihoods and biodiversity as well as the creation of baseline biological data for a proposed REDD+ scheme. They will lead data collection, supervising RSPB and local field staff, which will require considerable amounts of time spent in the field in Sierra Leone, and collaborate with existing International Research staff on data analysis, write up and publication of results. They will need to be able to work under their own initiative in a remote location, liaising with a wide range of local and other stakeholders as well as other RSPB staff.

You will need a PhD or similar research experience in ecology, including experience and good skills in the survey and identification of West African birds. You will need proven statistical and analytical skills, experience of undertaking and managing research, ideally in remote areas, and publication in scientific journals.
